Osgur Grieve provides the angling report for the Erriff fishery:
The Erriff has reopened again after being closed for fish welfare reasons for a little over 3 weeks. Since reopening 20 salmon have been landed up to this morning (Thursday Aug 2nd). Some of the catches included the following, on Saturday 28th Ian Ferris released 6 salmon from the middle garden pool and falls pool. They ranged in weight from 9lbs. to 1.5lbs. on a collie dog tube. Conor O’Leary released 2 wild grilse of 5.5lbs. and 6lbs. from the falls on a Munroe killer and blue Cascade of his own tying. James O’Neill released a 2lbs. wild grilse from the gauge pool also on a Collie dog tube.
On Monday 30th July John Phelan fished the evening and released a wild grilse of 5.5lbs. and landed a ranched grilse of 5lbs. John Ryan also released a wild grilse of 3.75lbs. all on a Cascade. On Wednesday august 1st Seamus O’Neill had a great catch of seatrout releasing 37 from beat 5 in the morning on silver flies ranging in weight from 0.75lbs. – 1lbs. Sean McMannamon released 3 wild grilse of 4lbs., 3lbs., and 3lbs. on a Calvin Shrimp and Tosh flies. Mark Regan fished the evening on beat 3 and released a fine 7lbs. salmon from the Tawnyard potholes on a Cascade. Regular visitor Stuart Royle had a slender 3.5lbs. grilse from the falls on a red Ally’s this morning that gave him a great battle.
Ian Ferris released 10 sea-trout from beat 4 ranging in weight from 0.5lbs. – 1lb. Interestingly a large number of fish have also been hooked and lost providing moments of great excitement followed by some disappointment but the angler that persists usually gets his prize in the end.
The sea-trout are returning in better numbers this year and are in good condition which is great to see. The grilse are also well spread out now through the system and fresh fish are coming in on each tide. For bookings please call the fishery office on (095) 42382.
