Ronan Cusack reports from Lough Mask, where mayfly hatches have been localized over the past few days with the southern end of the lake producing best.
Local angler Gerry O’Brien and his son Damien enjoyed a good days sport on dry Mays in Caher Bay this week. The lads landed and returned 11 trout over the limit and returned numerous others. Noel Moran from Ballinrobe guided two visiting American anglers over the weekend and they had some fantastic sport on wets and dries in the Inishowen / Inishocht area. UK anglers Howard and Mike had a day pulling wets along the Rocky shore on Sunday last and they had 3 fish over the limit plus several undersize.
Raymond Byrnes and Mick Hutton, home on holidays from the US had a good day on Sunday on wet and dry Mays. The lads finished with 5 good fish (best 2.5lbs, all released). Joe Fitzharris guided for Alan Bennett and Adrian Blackwell from the UK on Saturday and they also had 5 (best fish 2.5lbs, all released). Ronan Baggott and Raymond Byrnes fished together on Monday and they had 6 again on wet and dry mays. Cork anglers Mick Hegarty and Tom Sweeney fished for 5 days last week and they finished with 20 trout over the limit (best fish 2lbs, all released).
Tourmakeady Angling Club held the annual European Cup from Gortmore on Saturday last. The competition is run on a 15” limit and the heaviest single fish determines the winner. There were 96 anglers competing on the day with 19 trout handed in at the weigh-in. Denis Kelleher from Ballinrobe took first place with a trout of 3.10lbs. In second position was Peter Greene from Balyhaunis with a trout of 2.12lbs and in third position was Westport man Jonathan O’Grady with a trout of 2.11lbs.
