Despite the heavy rain on Monday, wonder of wonders the OPW left the weir alone and water levels remain good with 2 gates open. Conditiosn this week suited fly anglers better and fly took a better proportion of the catch, including some fine fish.

Among the anglers to score were Frenchman Jean le Moal, who had 2 grilse of 4 and 5lbs on shrimp for 2 visits during the week. Damian Crawford had a 4.5lbs grilse on shrimp, as did Peter Monahan. Fly anglers Damian Nolan and Dexter Lynas had nice springers, with Damian landing a 8.5lbs fish and Dexter taking a fine 10lbs salmon. Local man James Dunne fished shrimp and has a 9lbs fish.

John Ryan had a 4.5lbs grilse on fly, and local angler Sean O’Toole had a 5.5lbs fish on shrimp, but the fish of the week was landed by Billy Moylan from Laois, a magnificent 15lbs 3oz salmon that was taken on fly.

There appears to be a good number of fish moving in now, and with the dry spell we could see water levels drop further into good order for the fly men. The Galway grilse normally arrive in numbers around the last week of May, so prospects look good for the next few weeks.
