John Fleming reports from Galway Bay…

Very hard going on Saturday. Spurdog and tope were the initial plan but with a very strong and squally westerly wind that was soon shot in the foot. We went on the reefs instead looking for wrasse and pollock. Wrasse didn’t really play ball but we got a couple and shane had a gorgeous cuckoo. Shane also had a nice red gurnard. We also had a few good pollock with Keith getting this beauty about 10lb in only 30 feet of water.

A big pollack from a shallow mark

Sunday was a different story with a nice westerly breeze allowing us to drift slowly over the reefs inshore. We set out targeting pollack and wrasse. The plan was do a few hours lure fishing with soft plastics and metal jigs and they certainly did their job with the pollack and wrasse absolutely smashing them.

Ballan wrasse

We tried for tope and spurs for a couple of hours but unfortunately no joy.
All the same we had a great fun day on the light gear
