David Tantrum reports from Knockaderry and Carrigavantry…
On Saturday the 13th April we hosted the Scierra Pairs competition. It was the second time that it has been held in Ireland. The winner will go forward to the Final In the UK. Phil Dixon from Scierra Fishing Tackle gave the prizes and used the event to take a holiday in Ireland with his family.
The winners were Steven O’Reilly and Barry Healy. Last year’s winners, Sean and Brian Brennan, came second, as they did at the final in Grafham in 2018.
A cold gale-force wind did not put off the competitors or the fish.
All competitors received a gift bag of Scierra fishing tackle. Jack O’Mahony won the special bag that contained a pair of Costa fishing glasses!
We all wish Steven and Barry the best of luck for the final.
Both lakes are fishing well and all are welcome. Earlier in the month a visiting group of 12 anglers had a good day on Knockaderry accounting for a total of 78 trout; all of which were safely returned. Top rod on the day was Pat Hoare with 13 trout. Buzzers and blobs worked well.

Carrigavantry – This 30 acre reservoir is hidden in the hills behind Tramore. The lake can be fished from the dam and road and the rest of the lake shore needs waders. The deepest part is the island at 10 feet.Prolific hatches of lake olives and damsels occur. Stocking is with both browns and rainbows. You could loose your catch here to a 20lb Pike!
Knockaderry – The deepest part of the lake is 24 feet at the dam tower, the average depth is 6ft and this results in good weed growth. Trout fatten fast in this fertile water on caddis, snails and stickle backs, while lake olives, buzzers sedges and damsels bring on prolific rises. This 80 acre reservoir is a traditional top of the water drift fishery.
New members are welcome and an active programme of fly tuition is pursued to encourage beginners and get our youth out into the countryside.
