Wicklow Boat Charters Skipper, “Kit Dunne”, reports on a cracking start to 2020 with record numbers of Irish Specimen Spurdog. 4 recent trips all produced Specimen Spur with a massive 15 on one occasion to 16.5lb weight. The odd BullHuss, Conger and a Tope complimented the Spur catches.

Jerry Dixon with one of his Spurdog to 16lb.

The first trip produced 32 Spurdog of which 10 were specimens plus 3 un-claimed.; Local WBSAC Club member Jerry Dixon topped the poll with his 4 Specimen fish to 115cm long weighing in at near 16lb.

Ciaran o toole with his first ever Spur, a specimen too

After a 2 day storm the next trip out was less productive, however Ciaran O Toole of the GRAC Club managed his first ever Spur, at 14.5lb, 117cm Irish Specimen.

Weather settled again and the Spur came back to play in numbers, we had a red-letter day with 70+ Spur including 14 Specimen claims. Avid specimen hunter John Millerick hit the jackpot today with 4 Specimen size Spur to 15lb and 116cm.

Dan Lynch with his fine Tope of 1.5metres +

Next trip wasn’t far behind, I was keen today as I filled a seat. After a slow start we had a small Spur, then a double hook up, Dan Lynch produced a fine 1.5M Tope followed by a Specimen Spur for Myself, phew. We made a strategic move and hit them again. The day was topped off with 40+ Spur and 5 Specimen Fish, 3 for Cork Angler Ken Murphy and 2 for Myself.

Having recorded a total of 30 Specimen Spurdog already for 2020 the signs are promising for a growing spur population, coupled with Conger, Huss, and Tope at this stage things are looking good.

Aimee O Flaherty showed the men how to do it with the first Spur of the day.
Niall Burke wasn’t going to be left out, he claimed 2 Specimen Spur
Dennis Morgan landed this fine Conger, a nice surprise for Wicklow Bay
