Wicklow Boat Charters Skipper, “Kit Dunne”, reports on a few boat runs and reci trips recently with plenty of Spurdogs and Specimens. After 3 trips of varying results it confirms the Spurdog are still very un-predictable.

The first trip out for 2 hours with just 2 of us was one of those days. Anchor was set and leads were finding bottom while the bites came straight away. The mark produced 40 Spurdog of between 5lb and 10lb weight, none hit the elusive 12lb Specimen mark or 105cm long but it was hectic to say the least.

The second 2 hour trip a month later was a slow burner with a better stamp of fish. Fish were slow to begin but then when one came it was a good one. We caught maybe 12 Spurdog with 3 of them over 12lb and 105cm long, the best fish weighed in at 16.1lb, with a couple of Huss taken also it was a good 2 hours.

Next trip was in December in Level 3, with a local group of 5 anglers it proved to be less productive, typical! After a few hours inshore we landed 1 BullHuss and a couple of Dogs. We made our planned move to deeper water for the slack tide, anchors in we waited optimistically. We didn’t have the pleasure of Spurdogs but a couple of nice Huss, that’s Spur for you, or weather, 2 days preceding the trip we had Strong NE winds.

We have a few Neap dates left for December and seats will be issued soon for January.
