Killybegs Mariners’ 9-leg summer league reached its finale last Friday. Read their summer league roundup below…
With the 9-leg summer league reaching its finale last Friday night at Fintra Beach, there was plenty to celebrate for eventual winner, Club Chairman Cormac Burke who retained his slender lead over 2nd placed Shane Cunningham who, along with Darren Rawdon and Brian Smith, pushed him all the way over the final few outings.
Indeed with just an hour to go in the final leg, any one of the four aforementioned anglers could have swept to overall league triumph with a couple of late fish – a good indication of how competitive this year’s league has been.
Due to the fish off the beaches being more scarce and generally smaller in size at this time of year, the Mariners’ summer league never draws as many entries as the more favoured winter version but nonetheless some 15 anglers participated throughout this year’s summer league at various stages.
Sponsored by Mooney Boats, the summer league was fished over nine outings (with anglers allowed deduct their two worst scores), and took place at six different venues (Fintra, Nairn, Rossnowlagh south, Rossnowlagh north, Glencolmcille and Inver) and in total produced some 12 different species – all of which were measured, recorded, witnessed and returned alive.
Many club anglers will now be eagerly awaiting the start of the 2021/22 winter league which will begin after the club’s AGM on Monday 13th September.
