The fishing has been very good off the west Clare coast of late, with plentiful mackerel getting whitefish and predators feeding hard. Luke Aston, skppper of the Clare Dragoon, reports good mixed species fishing. Fish caught included pollack, cod, haddock, coalfish, and red gurnard among others.

A nice coalfish from the reef

Haddock

More haddock!

Also known as the Robin of the Sea, the red gurnard is a strikingly colourful catch

Shark!

The Lady Gwen, also fishing the west Clare coast, also enjoyed good fishing with plenty of whitefish about. Skipper Sean Maguire had a group with something else on their mind after a morning catching pollack and other reef fish. They set up a shark drift, and were rewarded with three porbeagle shark to the boat. I’m sure that was a lot of fun! All the sharks were tagged for the Irish Sportfish Tagging Programme, a wonderful citizen science initiative that has provided invaluable information on growth rates, distribution and migration patterns of some of our biggest fish species.

A nice porgie for this angler. Note the tag on the dorsal fin.

Another porbeagle shark before tagging and release.

Go fishing…
