Killybegs Mariners Sac finally finished their Winter League with outings no 6 & 7 completed!
See their report below…
And that’s a wrap…we finally got the Mariners winter league finished off on Friday evening after a few months delays with social distancing in play. This was league outing number 7 out of 7 with the best 5 scores to count towards the league places.
There was a strong northerly gale blowing but thankfully it was at our backs and it was a comfortable and enjoyable night’s fishing with some fine catches on the go including a 41cm flounder for John which set a new club record size which we started to keep records of from January. Also a fine double haul for Darren and a scattering of flounder all along the beach that had plenty of birds working the surf for the small sandeels.
The league went right down to the final session with Stefan leading by 6 points but a win on the night for Johnny would have won the league for him. The battle for 3rd was very close also between 4 anglers and in the end only 3 points separated 3rd from 6th.
Winners on the night as follows…
Longest flattie prize was won by John Burke with a lovely 41cm flounder.
2nd place cash prize was won by Cormac Burke (agonisingly just 2cm points from 1st)
And winner on the night (by 2cm) and also winning the Mariners winter league overall was Stefan Martin.
Well done to everyone that took part in the league and enjoyed the fishing on the Friday nights. Great to see new anglers out with us and everyone is at the same level and it just takes a bit of luck to get a win here and there with a great spread of winners of longest fish and 1st and 2nd prizes.
There was some lovely fish got over the course of the league with flounders over the 40cm and turbot in the mid 30s along with bass and good coalies and pollack.
Also thanks to the club sponsors at Mooney Boats Fishing Tackle and all the lads organising the events! Hoping to start a nine event league shortly for the summer months with details when available.
Go fishing…
