Mark Gannon of Courtmacsherry Sea Angling Centre reports on some excellent fishing for his guests:
Teasing out new ground and spending hours researching new marks for catching Common Skate has paid dividends for Skipper Sean Maxwell of the Lady Louise, Courtmacsherry. A group led by Ben Boore from Holland on his annual weeks fishing with Courtmacsherry Angling last week had over 20 Species with near specimen ling, conger, and coalfish, but the highlight was on the last day hooking up 19 skate, landing 14 tagged and released including 4 Irish Specimens a male of 2 metres and 3 females. Captors were Jerome Achtenberg with 2 Specimens a male of 199 cm and a female of 193cm, Danny van Dinteren with a female of 191cm and Denis van Qudinallen with a female of 188cm.

We have been part of the IFI Marine Sportfish Tagging Programme since its inception in the 1970’s and 2 of the skate landed were previously tagged by Séan last August and September.

We are also delighted to be part of the Cetus Skate tagging programme administered by UCC under the guidance of Dr Danielle Orrell.
On another Skate session last evening fishing from 6 to 9 pm, eight common skate were landed tagged and released all near the Irish Specimen length.
Fishing inshore and in the estuary has been somewhat curtailed by poor weather but good pollack and Bass in the estuary with several good giltheads from Burren.
