Despite improved water levels for much of the month, with 2-4 gates open, catches were low again during May, with 10 fish recorded for the month. Some good fish were caught upstream in Cong and on the Clare River, and good numbers of fish were also seen on the underwater camera in the weir pool, suggesting most fish were running straight through to the upper waters.

Fergal Cormican kicked off the catches for May on the 6th with a beautiful 16lbs fish on the fly. Sean O’Toole fished the spinner and landed a 7lbs fish on the 8th.

The same day Coleman Counihan had a fish just under 10lbs on fly. On the 9th Kevin Dolan had a fine 13.5lbs springer on shrimp. Fergal Cormican struck again on the 13th with a fish of 8.5lbs, and the next day Jean le Moal, a regular French visitor, had a fish of 8lbs on spinner. Brisn King landed an 8lbs salmon on the 24th to shrimp, but the 29th was the best day of the month. Sean O’Toole had a grilse of 4.5lbs on spinner; pappy Cotter had a second grilse of 5lbs on shrimp, and Eoin Warner landed a lovely 8.5lbs fish on the fly.

At the time of writing, fresh fish are entering the river daily, with grilse starting to dominate the run, and hopefully this is the start of a good grilse run.
