Home Sea angling reports Goby’s gobbling Mariners baits off the piers in Donegal

Goby’s gobbling Mariners baits off the piers in Donegal

Piers are usually the handiest places to fish from, and you can often drive right up to the spot you want to fish. They can sometimes be overlooked and left to the ‘mackerel bashers’, but they can produce some varied fishing and help to put a few ticks on the species list for the year. A few of the Killybegs Mariners took a trip to a local pier during the week and managed seven species in an evening’s fishing: smoothhound, rock goby, black goby, ballan wrasse, whiting, pouting and poor cod.

That smoothhound came hot on the heels of the one caught by Proinnsias Doherty a couple of days previously, which was the first one landed by the Mariners in Donegal Bay this year. Hopefully, they will become a feature in catches over the next few weeks.

The first Mariners smoothy of the season fell to Proinnsias Doherty
