Skipper Luke Aston has been out a fair bit over the past couple of weeks, and reports some very good fishing on the deep reefs offshore.
This week mackerel have been in good supply at Loop Head, providing plenty of bait and good eating too.

The reefs produced lots of pollack and coalfish to 5lbs. Some link and fine whiting were caught too, but often the sheer number of coalies made it hard to get to the bottom. A good complaint to have!

Luke notes that the fish this year seem to be stuffed with small squid – he’s never seen so many. Maybe a box of calamari would be a good idea for bait…
Luke also posted a photo of a poster that most charter skippers are now displaying on their boats. As the group the charter skippers of Ireland are taking some measures to encourage anglers to put back smaller pollack that will survive. A worthwhile conservation initiative and well done to the skippers!

Go fishing…
