Penny and James from Meath targeted tench in the Royal Canal near to Longwood one evening this week.
A stiff breeze softened as the evening went on and died altogether after 9pm, when the tench came on the feed as the light began to change. There was plenty of fizz in the swim, as the fish mopped up the pre baited corn and maggots, and Penny’s float dipped under as she managed to hook into her first ever tench. James expertly netted the fish for her.

James hooked into a couple of decent hybrids and landed his first ever perch, but just couldn’t hook into a tench as the fish were feeding warily. There were missed bites and close calls but the pair were happy with their relaxing evening on the banks of the canal by the time they wrapped up at 10.30pm. No doubts they’ll be back to capture more canal tench in the near future.
