This report from Gus O’Reilly (aged 12) on a recent fishing trip with Damien Culliney of Anglers Paradise:
The day started when my dad woke me up very early I had to get ready straight away, then we went straight to the car – the drive took about an hour and a half to the lake.
When we got there it took a bit to get ready and get on the boat – but once we got on board we went straight out to the lake. The boat went super-fast, so fast that I had to keep my hat on my head by holding tight, it was great fun.
The weather was sunny and the boat was fancy and way better than my dad’s, there was a monitor that could see the fish under the water which was really cool.
I nearly forgot to say who I was on the boat I was with my dad, his friend Myles and Damien – the fishing guide who owns the boat. I remember Myles catching the first fish – I think it was a roach – but that was no good cause we were looking for perch.
Then not too long after, I caught a roach which we decided to use for bait to catch a pike. Damien had lots of different kinds of rods and he cast out the roach on a strong rod to try and catch the pike.

Then we had lunch – Damian had brought some really good tomato soup and sandwiches.
After lunch I was jigging for perch but then I got a bite on the pike rod with the roach as the deadbait, so I had to reel it in. It was very strong but after a while I got it to the boat and Damien got it in the net – it was a massive pike but to my dad said someday soon I’ll get a bigger one! It was my new personal best fish and waking up early and an hour and a half car journey was worth it! I want to go fishing again with Damien during the summer to get another!
