18 members of South Shore SAC headed to Roney Point for the latest round of their Master Angler competition. The strong winds were throwing up some decent surf, and there was some colour in the water. On seeing the good surf, they expected some bass to be active, and that’s how it turned out, as the bass started to feature in catches. But they were surprised when numbers of small gurnards were also actively feeding in the surf and happy to take angler’s baits.

As high water approached, bites slackened off, but things picked up again once the tide had turned and some better quality fish, including dogs and a smoothy, started to show. But the fishing never really kicked into top gear as fish were hard to get, and that meant it was a close competition. Alby Allan took Zone B by the margin of a single centimetre, but the competition winner on the night was Jarek, who had a decent bag of bass and gurnards from Zone A.
