Chart boat skipper Luke Aston reports from Carrigaholt, Co. Clare…

15 August: It’s been lovely out there on the water and the leaping basking sharks are amazing.

Fishing has been going ok even with this easterly breeze. The mackerel are very spotty and in small shoals when you do find them. Out on the reefs the fishing is steady. We had a shark drift yesterday and in a very slow drift had 3 sharks on. We also had some lovely whiting from the bottom.

16 August: Even with a fresh SE breeze the sea was more settled today and we got some Mackerel quickly.

Then out to the reefs to steady day of Pollack with a few Spurdog’s and a nice Ling thrown in.

17 August: First day for a group of Dutch lads that are back for a week’s fishing. Day started looking for mackerel and they proved tricky but we got on a good spot. Some fine mackerel mixed with Scad and this surprised pilchard.

They wanted to target Spurdog’s so we had a busy day on them with just a few Pollack and Ling.

19 August: Fishing away in lovely conditions. Mackerel are being a right pain though and proving very hard to find. Plenty small pollack around though on the inshore ground with the odd big one to keep you on your toes!

Once we rounded up enough bait and also using squid we settled in for a session at anchor and had some strap Conger and a few fine Bullhuss.

Go fishing…
