We got a great email from Markuss Urban, a teenager over on holidays from Latvia, and we were astounded at the size of the conger eel he landed! Check out his report and photos below:
Just wanted to share something unforgettable from my summer in Ireland! I’m Markuss, 16 years old, visiting from Latvia for the holidays. On Monday, July 21st, I went fishing off the pier in West Cork—and reeled in the biggest fish of my life!

It was a massive conger eel, longer than me (I’m 175cm) and estimated at over 40lbs. The thrill of the sea air, the tug on the line, and the disbelief when I finally pulled it up made the whole experience feel like a movie scene. It’s a moment I’ll carry with me forever.

Half of mackerel and 10/0 hook did the trick.
Fish was unhooked and released shortly after.
What a catch, and what a memory of his trip to Ireland. Well done young man, and we’re sure we’ll see you back on these shores again!
