West Cork and District SAC started their season at Garrylucas on Sunday…

We hosted our first comp of the new season yesterday evening, due to poor weather conditions our first-choice venue Garrylucas was unfishable so a backup venue was required and the choosing venue was Broadstrand just outside the village of Courtmacsherry.

We are delighted to welcome our new members Pat, Dave and Cloda to the club and hope ye enjoy the fishing for the season ahead.

Fishing time for this match was 5pm-9pm, 20 anglers had entered this match with some of Irelands top match angler on show.

Lines hit the water at 5pm and Stephen O’Donovan on peg 13 was the first to have his card marked with a couple of rockling. A few fish showed in the first hour but overall the fishing was slow for the duration of this match. Brian Murphy on peg 7 and Pete Davis on peg 10 started to scratch out a couple of fish as the evening wore on, Pete had a nice flounder of 35cm which would go on to win the flat fish pool on the night netting Pete €105, well done Pete. Mark O’Sullivan on peg 11 was very unlucky when he dropped a strap conger in the wash right at his feet. This opened the door for Alan O’Dowling to pick up the biggest round pool on the night with a 24cm whiting, this was probably the most valuable pin whiting caught in Ireland at the weekend, this was also worth €105, well done Alan.

As the night progressed conditions didn’t get any easier as the weed, rain and easterly winds hampered all of us at different stages throughout the comp so with lines up at 9pm and the scores done it was new member Pat Keating who prevailed as victor with 8 fish, excellent fishing Pat in hard conditions. Brian Murphy took 2nd place with 8 fish also and a great start to the season for Brian and Stephen O’Donovan would take 3rd spot.

Species on the night consisted of whiting, rockling and dogfish.
