It was a long winter in Galway, and water levels remained high for most of the spring period, with no angling taking place. The dry weather of the past couple of weeks has seen water levels falling upstream, and finally the river dropped to 2 gates open on the weir. Several anglers were in to try their luck on Monday, with renewed optimism given the nice conditions, and they were handsomely rewarded!
First of the Year
James Carney hooked a springer on the spinner, and he landed a lovely fresh fish of just over 10lbs – the first salmon of 2026 in Galway. Well done James!
Dave O’Reilly from Dublin was also visiting for his first session of the year. Fishing the fly, he landed a second sparkling silver fish, almost exactly the same size as James’s fish.
And not to be outdone, Peter Farrelly, who was fishing the shrimp in Jimmy’s Pool, hooked and landed a third salmon of approx. 12lbs.

Three happy anglers heading home, and the fishery is off the mark. Great to see some lovely spring salmon in the river, and hopefully this is the start of a good spring run.
