The Galway Fishery reopened last week after a long closure due to high water temperatures. Water temps finally fell below 18C on Thursday, and the fishery opened on Friday morning. Anglers were into fish almost immediately, with 18 fish landed that day, almost all on fly. Denis Healy landed 2 grilse to 7.6lbs, Brian O’Donoghue had 2 fish to 7.3lbs, and Gary Kilroy also had 2 over 6lbs each. Liam Gilsenan and Michael O’Driscoll had a brace each, as did Peter Kavanagh and Terry McDermott. The grilse are in fantastic condition this year, with most fish averaging 5.5-6.5lbs, and a good few 7lbs fish too.
Saturday saw 12 fish landed, including 2 for John McCarthy, the best a fine fish of 8.2lbs. Declan Tuffy also had 2 grilse for his visit, as did Niall Lynch, while there were also grilse for Tony Kavanagh, Simon Yorke, Eamon Power and Paul Whelan. There was a 7lbs fish for Steven Lymes, and Hugo Arce caught and released a fine salon of 9-10lbs.
Fishing slowed on Sunday and Monday, with 5 and 6 fish landed both days. Brendan Doyle had 2 grilse to 6.9lbs, Gordon Sweetman also had 2 over 5lbs, and Hugo Arce released another nice grilse. Fergal Cormican, Michael Browne, Eamon Cusack and Eoin Cosgrove all had grilse of 5-6.5lbs too.
Tuesday again saw a good day, with 12 fish landed. The best fish of the day was 8.5lbs to the rod of Paddy Gargan. Malachy Donnelly also had an 8lbs fish, Martin Kiely had 2 to 7p, while there were nice grilse for Jim Stafford, Neil Spellacy, David Hoy and Steve Zemp, and 2 each for Niall Lynch and Padraig Fahy.
Unfortunately the warm weather the east of Ireland has been experiencing has begun to arrive, and the overcast drizzle of the last week has given way to bright sunshine this afternoon. See below notice to anglers.
Warm Water Protocol
Anglers are notified that the water temperature has exceeded 18 degrees C today, and with very warm conditions forecast for the next week, the fishery will close again if the temperature rises above 20C. At current water temps, anglers are urged to use caution when fishing, minimise fish handling, and keep fish in the water when releasing fish. Anglers should check with the fishery before travelling to ensure it remains open for their visit.
