David Norman of Angling Adventures West Cork reports from a “textbook guided kayak trip”…
We had what I would describe as a textbook Guided Kayak Trip with Niall Kelly last week.
A first time Kayak Angler but experienced shore fisherman with bait and lures from Co Louth, Niall was a pleasure to coach and fish with picking it all up quickly and generally making things easy for me as a result 😊
We launched on time in small swell and beautiful sunshine, moved to the first spot and were quickly surrounded by raft of floating weed and detritus but had learned enough about the humour of the fish at that location to leave them in peace and let the weed to drift on past in the light breeze while we moved off to another area which was mainly clear, planning to return later on way back.
I have a pretty well tested system to progress through in terms of the coaching, rotating through the lures and generally searching out active fish and we started to get results which built throughout the session and I extended the trip as the fine calm conditions held.
The baits that worked were small paddle tails and senko worms from @Pirate_Lures, which hold up so well to hard use without being stiff and lifeless, along with some slow pitch jigs which a bit strangely the Wrasse seemed to really like
At the height of the session we had at multiple double hook ups, Niall broke his PB for Pollock with a fish he named the Monster, we landed some very respectable Wrasse and one lime green beast of a fish, a third and surprise species was a beautiful Cuckoo Wrasse for the second time only since I’ve been running these trips.
So all in all a textbook guided saltwater kayak fishing trip as I say in the ever beautiful West Cork.
I still have some availability over the Summer and Autumn for Kayak or Shore Fishing as the weather and conditions allow…
