The Hooked Live Angling Show took place last weekend at Citywest, Dublin and was a great success. There was a great line-up of world class angling celebrities and wide range of demonstrations with many exhibits ranging from tackle, techniques, venues and angling organisations. A great gathering of Anglers from all over discussing what they like to do best.
Another great show was put on by an amazing leaping salmon on the river Fermoy. Local Rowing Club coaches Davy Pyne and Tony O’Brien were out on a training session with the under 15 males when Houdini the Salmon decided to jump onboard. Unfortunately poor hitch-hiking Houdini didn’t have a soft landing! The estimated to be 14lb fish gave both boatmen quite a shock.
The Salmon around the rest of the country weren’t as eager to get caught. With the harsh weather which we had this week, anything from snow, sleet, rain and storm, it was hard for anglers to catch anything. Lough Melvin had little to report except a 4lb trout Kelt caught which was instantly returned. Sheamus Heneghan fared better in Delphi but it was short lived. He had a fresh fish on for about 40 seconds in the Meadow pool. Using his Badger Tube (or shaving brush as I have heard some people call it) on a floating line.

Regulars to Melvin Lodge Jean-Pierre and son Nick from Belgium fought off the driving rain and wind and managed to catch themselves 24 pike in 6 days. They used various methods during the week with the largest fish falling to Roach dead bait. Unable to fish off the Wexford coast because of the weather conditions, Sean Jordan treated himself to a fishing day on the River Barrow. After an hour or so, Sean caught a nice Barrow pike. But this week’s Catch of the Week goes to Ross Macklin of Lee Reservoirs Angling Services, with his huge pike which he caught on a West Cork Lake. A personal best for Ross who is a freshwater ecologist doing his PhD on the Ecology of carp in Ireland.
The Sea angling scene was quiet this week with conditions difficult for anyone to venture out. John Quinlan of the Thatch Cottage in Cahersiveen, Kerry tells us that during the closed Bass season (May 15th to June 15th) he intends to hold a series of 3 day workshops over the 4 week period in which anglers will learn where to find and how to catch these wonderful fish. The price will be from €295 per person and will include full board accommodation, guiding and tuition, flies, and all local transportation.
The forecast for the weekend is for wet weather. Monday is to be very cold with widespread wintry showers. Milder weather is set to return after mid-week.
Tight lines to all,
Nancy Hearne
