Mike Murray of Murray’s Angling Services reports that the Portumna Great Outdoors/Splash Festival Match took place over this weekend attracting anglers from all over Ireland and England. Anglers testing the match stretch in the days prior to the festival were getting weights of 80lb+ of Hybrids and Roach. The weather conditions had an effect on fishing with strong winds and rain on Sunday.

We had an additional problem with a speed boat towing water skiers up and down the match stretch on both days ( I have since spoken to the operator and this should not happen in the future). Despite these problems most anglers weighed in. Catches were predominately Roach and Hybrids with only the odd Bream being landed. Fishing the pole produced mainly Roach and the feeder being the winning method used by Dave Brookes with 56lbs.
Results
- Dave Brookes 1st 56lbs
- Paul McCaul 2nd 38lbs
- Leigh Maitland 3rd 34lbs
Prizes were also awarded the runners up and section winners. Total prize money was €2500 with additional fishing tackle prizes donated by Maureen Curran of Palmerstone Stores Tackle shop Portumna.
Many thanks to all sponsors and in particular Inland Fisheries who cleared over 50 swims in the weeks prior to the match. All commented on what a sterling job they had done which will be put to good use over the coming months by pleasure anglers. We hope to organise a 4or 5 day event next year with even bigger prize money.
