Coarse angling guides in Ireland

Carrigavantry is about 30 acres in size.  Fishing on this lake is from bank or boat.  The lake has a fairly consistent depth of 8-10ft with several shallower bays.  The water is renowned for being  very clear throughout the season and very prolific hatches of buzzer, olives and damsels occur.  End of season dry fly action to daddies can be spectacular.

Day tickets are sold at the Centra shop in Kilmeaden Village which opens at 7am and closes at 9pm weekdays and 7pm Sundays.

Lough Acalla is a rich limestone lake of some 30 acres 2 miles north of Kilconnell, Co Galway. It is stocked with Rainbow Trout and some Browns.

Dry Fly, nymph and artificial fly lures work well.

Most of the banks on the lake are clear and wading is possible. In the summer the water here tends to be very weedy.

Car parking facilities are available along the shoreline.

• DAILY BAG LIMIT: 3 trout
• ANGLING METHODS PERMITTED: Trout Fishing only, Artificial Fly only.

Directions: Proceed from Kilconnell, turn right just before brodericks pub. Continue on the L17423 for 3km and then turn left.

Lough Bofinne is one of IFI’s SWRBD 4 Stocked Lakes. It is an attractive, convenient, 25 acre, clear water lake. Exceptional shore angling facilities. Boats are available if required. An excellent stock of Rainbow Trout and some Brown Trout are present.

Occasional Pike, Perch, Eels and Rudd are also present.

Successful angling methods include worms with a float artificial flies or small spinners.

Waterford City & County Trout Anglers manages two lakes in Waterford which are available for fly fishing by permit for  rainbow trout all year round (brown trout season 17th March to 30th September)

Knockaderry is about 80 acres in size.  Fishing on this lake is from boat only.  The deepest part of the lake is 24 feet at the dam tower  but the average depth is about 6ft and this results in good aquatic life providing food for the trout. Trout feed on caddis pupae, snails and fry and the lake gets hatches of olives, buzzers, sedges and damsels. There is a good population of wild browns which must be released if caught.

The fishery comprises of 2 trout lakes run by Portarlington Angling Club
Open all year, both are fly fishing only and club membership & angling permits are required ( sorry no day ticket, annual & season only) and we always welcome new member.
