Trout anglers did well on Melvin over the deep water drifts

Lindsey Clarke reports  from LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 12th  to Sunday 18th Sept 2016.

Lough Melvin was quiet on the salmon angling front with few rods targeting the same but continued to fish well for trout again this week. Mainly Sonaghan over the deep water drifts. On Sunday the O’Doherty Cup competition was held and fished out of Garrison. The attendance was down somewhat due to its cancellation last Sunday but the day went well with most boats recording decent catches. The winners were Irvan Marchall and Gordon Law. In 2nd place were local father and son team, Sean and Darren Maguire. In third place were Jackie Mahon and Mark Devan. The heaviest fish award went to Gene Harron. All funds raised are given to a charity yet to be decided.

Drowes picked up this week with some 20 salmon caught

Lindsey Clarke reports from the  RIVER DROWES – Monday 12th  to Sunday 18th Sept 2016.

Water levels were fair all week on the Drowes. The gauge read 0.56m on Monday and by Sunday the gauge had only fallen to 0.54m. The river fished well given the fairly low attendance with some 20 salmon caught. J. McArlean reported 4 grilse/salmon to 12lb caught and released on fly from the Mill Pool for his days fishing with all of these released again. Peter Cooks logged a 4lb grilse caught on a fly.

Local rods Danny Fox and son John fished for a day and recorded a fish apiece caught on fly. Danny’s was 7lb and Johns 4½lb. 2 French parties staying in the fishery accommodations were fishing this week. One party recorded 2 salmon caught on spinner weighing 4 & 7lb. The other French party caught 12 salmon for the week on fly and spinner.

Fine looking pike weighing in at 23lbs 7ozs for Aidan Traynor
Fine looking pike weighing in at 23lbs 7ozs for Aidan Traynor

Aidan Traynor had a right battle on his hands yesterday when a cracking pike tested his skills against him in a great battle.  Experience won out and Aidan landed this super 23lb 7oz pike even after she broke his landing net!

A great catch and well worth the trip to Lough Corrib for Aidan, who was wrapped up warm in his floatation suit.

A slow week on the Moy with only 130 salmon caught

Markus Müller, Angling Information Manager with IFI Ballina office reports from the River Moy:

Yet, another slow week for anglers on the Moy system, with only 130 salmon reported bringing the yearly total, so far, to 5,619.

Some of this week’s catches included two salmon for German visitor, Manfred Müller on prawn from the Coolcronan Fishery. Also on Coolcronan, Manfred’s countryman, Dominik Weber, had two fish; one on prawn and one on spinner. Despite the difficult conditions the East mayo water provided some reasonable fly fishing during the week. Successful anglers included: Alain Bouvet, France, with a 6 lbs. fish, Matthias Engels, Germany with two small grilse and Ralf Hemmersbach, also Germany, with a 3 lbs. and a 6 lbs. grilse.

Some lovely marked trout for angler on Lough Mask

HF with a lovely coloured fish
HF with a lovely coloured fish

Angler HF McCloy was well pleased with his catch from Lough mask on Thursday.  He tells us the fishing was good, mostly deep but some in the shallows, as well.  HF had a double hook up with both fish over 14 inches.
