An active week on Erriff with fresh fish still entering the system

Fishery manager Osgur Grieve of the Erriff Fishery reports on angling activities during the past week up to Monday 19th:

A total of 7 grilse and 12 sea-trout were caught for the week. Tuesday the 13th saw regular guest Martin Sesselmann (Germany) catch a 3.5lbs grilse from the falls pool on a cascade variant which he released. Not to be outdone Wolfegang Sesselmann (Martin’s dad) had 5 sea-trout the same day between 0.5 and 1lbs on a cascade, from the falls,lower garden and sea-pool. This was a great way to end what had been an eventful holiday for them. Another regular guest Paddy Donegan released 3 sea-trout on the 13th on a collie dog between 0.5 and 0.75lbs on beat 9 along with a 3.5lbs salmon from Tawnyard potholes on beat 3 using a willie gunn tube fly.

Our chef Olivier Denisot released a grilse of 2lbs. from the middle garden on the 14th using a cascade.

The 15th saw Paddy Donnegan back into action in the bridge pool using a silver rat to catch a 2.75lbs grilse and 3 sea-trout between 0.5lbs and 1.25lbs which he released. Fellow angler Mick Vincent had a 2lbs grilse from the bridge pool on a ”special”.

Regular visitor Ian Ferris released 3 sea-trout of 0.75lbs on the 18th and lost 2 salmon.

Peter Unsworth (UK) had a good day on the 19th catching a fresh grilse of 4.6lb from the upper garden pool on a stoat’s tail and followed this up an hour later with a fresh 2lbs grilse from the falls, again on the stoat’s tail which he returned.

We still have some fresh fish entering the system and there are rods available before the end of the season. Well done to all our anglers!

Owen Jackman is no stranger to big fish having fished the Suir for many years as well as chased salmon overseas. This weekend he had his fish of a lifetime – his biggest Suir salmon yet, a super fish estimated at 30lb plus. This huge salmon is the biggest reported fish from the Suir this year.

Owen caught the salmon on a home tied fly, Golden Flamethrower, fished on a sinktip thrown by a 15′ Loop rod and Hardy Perfect reel. Having hooked into the fish he initially thought it was foul hooked in the tail as he couldn’t get any control over it. Once the fish showed himself though, Owen knew he had a job on his hands and a very serious salmon to land. The fight took almost 45 minutes to play out. As a very experienced River Suir salmon angler and conservationist Owen put a huge effort into ensuring the fish was carefully handled and fully revived before being released

This salmon was about a week in off the tide and one of about 20 multi sea winter autumn fish caught since the last flood on the Suir cleared. Most of the fish being encountered at this time are coloured and anglers are reminded that at this time of year extra times needs to be given to ensuring any salmon caught is fully revived to ensure the fish survives his ordeal.

After ensuring the salmon was fully revived Owen released the fish to continue his journey up the river.

Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI ) has secured funding of €85,346 to develop a Lough Nanannagh in Claremorris. The proposed project will see Lough Nanannagh developed as a managed stocked trout fishery, complete with a recreation hub located around the lake. The funding was awarded by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs as part of the Government’s programme to support rural development….

Council to start cleaning Bandon river ‘within days – The Southern Star

CONTRACTORS for Cork County Council look set to move into the river in Bandon to begin temporary cleaning of the riverbed.
Although the OPW are now on site to begin the major flood relief work on the river, the temporary work – which has been undertaken every year since 2009 – has also been given the go-ahead.
This will involve cleaning the riverbed, near the bridge, of gravel and sand build-up, which will alleviate a number of issues in the event of a moderate flood….

River Suir Public Meetings – Waterford Today

The Waters and Communities Office are in the process of hosting a series of Public Meetings on the River Suir to discuss the potential of the River Suir and its tributaries, possible management options, funding for various projects and a shared vision for the future. Very successful, informative and well attended meetings have already been held in Newcastle, Golden, Thurles, Cahir, Fethard, Piltown, Templemore, Tipperary, Clonmel and Ballymacarbry.

Meetings will be held in Carrick-on-Suir, Portlaw and Waterford this week….

€31,450 funding to Gweebarra Fishing Club for wheelchair accessible paths – Donegal Democrat

Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) has secured funding of €31,450 to develop part of the Gweebara River Valley in Donegal in partnership with Gweebara Fishing Club and Donegal Local Development Company.

The proposed project includes extension of an existing designated wheelchair accessible path for anglers and trail walkers along the valley with funding awarded by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs as part of the Government’s programme to support rural development….

KAI head to Lough Ree for friendly with feisty fish

Killinarden Angling Initiative enjoyed a great day out on Saturday the 17th, when 11 adult members all met up on LoughRee Lanesborough Angling Hub for a 24 hour friendly match!….

kai-groupThe weather was perfect on Saturday and we started catching fish from the onset, bream, hybrids, tench, perch, roach and rudd all fell to our baits, We fished into the dark with the fishing slowing the later it got but by midnight all except 1 or 2 had retreated to our tents for a few hours sleep.

At 4:30am people began to rise again but the weather had turned and the fish had gone off the feed. A few of us managed a few extra LBS with some small bream and roach, also Christopher (Cash) caught a lovely 10lbs pike which put him in the lead for taking the 1st place on the pike.

Fantastic place and very welcoming people, its nice to arrive in a town and have people come over to welcome you. There is not a lot of photos because we were all to busy fishing.

P.S A huge think you to Liam Sweeney for all his help! Top man.

Killinarden Angling Initiative

KAI was set up in March 2014 in Killinarden, Tallaght. Its principle aims are to promote, develop and improve angling in the Killinarden and the greater west Tallaght area and is affiliated with the National Coarse Fishing Federation Ireland. During the summer months the main work of the initiative is taking young people from Killinarden on fishing courses .The Initiative has also been a catalyst in setting up a children’s and Adult fishing club in Killinarden for many of these young people and giving them a hobby they can enjoy for life.

KAI run fishing competitions for juniors and a host of other events feature on the calendar, attracting greater interest to the sport year after year.

Good turn out for 2017 FIP-ed World Youth Angling qualifiers at Inniscarra

Saturday and Sunday saw junior anglers competing at U15, U20 and U25 age groups in the last two of four qualifiers for the 2017 FIPS-ed World Youth Angling Championships  hosted by Coarse Angling Ireland NCFFI on Inniscarra Lake in Co. Cork and the superb “Coachford Greenway Stretch”.

The three teams of five will be announced in due course once ratified and anglers will be contacted. Well done to everyone who took part.,

Some good action off the Clare coast with skipper Luke Aston in Carrigaholt enjoying calm seas and monster fish.  A calm day was very welcome yesterday considering the windy weather of late.  Luke brought a group out after sharks.   The SixGill traces were laid and the result was great! At an estimated 1100 lbs this chunky one for Garry gave a great ending to his second trip with Carrigaholt Sea Angling.

Séan Maguire’s, skipper of the Lady Gwen II reported a good variety of species after a slow start yesterday and some fine big mackerel caught on the way home.

Super 23lb salmon on the fly caught and released on the Munster Blackwater

Paul Whelan of Fort William Estate is delighted to report that a record was been broken on Friday 16th September on the fishery with the heaviest fish ever caught on fly.
Tim Keane from Dublin guided by Fort William’s own Chris Coady landed and released safely this beautiful fish on fly. After a good battle she went off good and strong to fight another day.
Picture does the fish no justice but she measured 39.5″ long so approx 23lbs.
Well done to all.
Ps. They landed another 4 fish and all were released.

On Thursday they also had a great day on the river with 5 fish landed and all returned safely. Best fish of the day was of approx 16lbs. Nice fish of 12lbs landed and released on fly so with levels dropping fast and clarity improving the fish should pick up even more.
