Good water helps fishing on Erriff as late season sport produces fish

Fishery manager Osgur Grieve reports on another positive week on the Erriff following on from last week, with 6 salmon and 13 sea trout for the week. Regular visitors from France Jean-Jacque Calvar and Jean-Francoise Calvar with their friend Jean-Pierre Leroy had 2 salmon of 2lbs and 2.5lbs on a ”little black fly” of their own tying along with 10 seatrout between 1 and 2lbs for the last 4 days of their holiday. Graham Smith (UK) released 1 salmon of 6.5lbs from the Paddystick Pool on Beat 3 using a Collie Dog, interestingly this fish took the fly as he dragged it across the surface of the pool. Graham also had 3 sea trout of 1lb for his visit. Thursday 8th was Martin Davison’s turn when he released a 3.5lbs grilse from the Glenacally pool on Beat 5 using a Park Shrimp.

Traci Walker along with her husband Marc fished on the morning of the 9th in a gale and pouring rain, their perseverance paid off with Traci catching her first salmon of approximately 4lbs, which was then returned after a quick photo. This was a great achievement as it was her first attempt at fly-fishing!

Saturday 10th saw George Jones from Tyrone release a 5lbs grilse from the Broken Bridge Pool on a Cascade.

Fishing prospects look good for the next few days with plenty of water in the system and we still have rods available for anglers looking for late season salmon fishing.

Aasleagh Lodge and the Erriff Fishery currently has a special offer available for the last couple of weeks of the season – a two-night fishing package with one dinner and one day’s fishing for €188.80 per person sharing. For bookings please call (095) 42208 or check www.errifffishery.ie

Difficult fishing conditions on the Munster Blackwater

Difficult conditions for anglers on the Munster Blackwater with the river in flood.  It’s at times like these anglers might do better if they check out the smaller rivers.  The river Araglin in Co. Cork which is a tributary of the Blackwater is a prime example.

Earlier in the week Ballyduff Salmon Fishery had Tom Coote catching and releasing 2 fish of around 6lbs on the fly at Ballyduff Bridge. They remind you that they have a few remaining days left for the month of September, so if interested please message them on their facebook page or email: connieghillie@gmail.com

Glenda Powell from the Blackwater Salmon Fishery was delighted as angler Nicola Thompson had her first Munster Blackwater salmon this week.

Blackwater Salmon Fishery

Blackwater Salmon Fishery has 3 beats downstream of the weir and 2 upstream of the weir. Blackwater Salmon Fishery offers fishing on approximately 5 miles of the river Blackwater. The fishing is spread throughout the middle section of the river to offer good sport throughout the fishing season. Due to the location of the beats, fishing can still usually be offered in low or high water.

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery

Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

Bass

Anglers fishing with Bellavista Angling Centre in the last week have seen for themselves the vast range of fishing on offer from Cork Harbour. Best of all the learned first hand that there is nearly always a corner where fish can be had when the weather is bad.

Following the worst of the weather, repeat visitors the UK, Stacey, Scot and Steve were out  on Monday, catching plenty and enjoying the fishing. They had another successful day with plenty of catches across a variety of species.

The Bellavista Angling Centre is taking bookings for 2017 now.

Weather not great for Derg pikers

Lionel
Lionel's 96cm pike

Lough Derg’s anglers are made of stern stuff but the weekends winds kept them at bay for the most part. Paul Bourke of Irish Fishing Tours managed a few good looking fish on Monday while Lionel from Montauban in France had a PB of 96cm fishing with TJ’s Angling Centre.

Luke Aston in Carrigaholt reports that the big storm at the end of last week put the kibosh on plans, and they were tied up on Friday and Saturday. Sunday’s fishing was all in the estuary, sheltering from a gale of southerly wind. Plenty of Thornback Rays and a few other bits and pieces.

Ling

They got back out west on Monday. The wind was gone but there was a big swell running. Fishing was reported as  OK with plenty pollack and a few nice eating ling. The spurdogs were around as well to do a job on the whitefish traces!

Yesterday was a lovely day on the sea although there was still a bit of swell following the weekend’s storms. Luke and his anglers fished at anchor for the day and had 2 skate over 100lbs and a Porbeagle of about 40lbs. They also had some conger and a Huss.

George Ryan reports on the inaugural coarse competition on the river Blackwater at Navan…

The first Perpetual Sean Mc Cabe Trophy was held on the River Blackwater in Navan today. Sean was a good friend and fishing pal of NCAC stalwart Bowbie O’ Malley , and it was fitting that with the gracious consent of our fellow anglers in Navan Anglers , this historic match went ahead on a local water .

While the fishing was challenging , a most enjoyable was had by all , with rising NCAC star Callum Reilly , narrowly pipping Bowbie himself to take the silverware .

Lee Addy wins Irish Open Feeder Championships on Muckno

Dick Caplice reports on the Irish Open Feeder Championships fished at Lough Muckno over the weekend…

A good stamp of fish on Muckno
A good stamp of fish on Muckno

A top notch field was headed once again by Lee Addy in two superb days of fishing on the Irish Open Feeder championships, which concluded on Sunday evening, on sizzling but turbulent lough Muckno. For the second year in a row this superb angler claimed the title with almost 30kgs of feeder caught fish, to eclipse an equally superb angler Romantas, just 2kgs adrift. Gareth Lamberth came in with a 25kg total for 3rd place after his fine showing all week on the Lough Muckno 5 day feeder festival, where he was a constant threat.

Or you can play the numbers game

The ever consistent, and now venue specialist, Michael Buchwalder held off Leo Koot for 4th place and the next 5 not making the podium reads like the who’s who in Irish and U.K angling. Mark Pollard led those that followed home in quick succession, in the following order, international aspirant Johnny Mc Kinley, International Paul Leese, UK international and exceptional feeder angler Mick Vials and last but by no means least, oft times Irish international Alan Larkin making up the top ten.

Leader after day one, Paul Leese,  was a weather casualty today, as were many of the day one leaders, on sections most exposed to the worst of the elements, which again saw some trees brought down but fortunately no harm was caused or damage sustained.

Well done and congratulations to all of our winners and competitors, all 70 of whom saw it out to the end, so good was the fishing on offer and so close were affairs to the end.

Finally a quote from Mick Vials one of the most highly rated feeder anglers ever, and regular on the best feeder international team in the world that of England, might put some unbiased perspective on this very special water that is Lough Muckno.

“Lough Muckno – A place with more fish you’ll never find. The 2 day feeder open was a great way to start my experience of this place. You can park behind every peg and there’s more bites than you can handle!!!”

Koschnick and Kusters win €10000 prize at World Pairs

Overall Pairs’ Winners Jens Koschnick and Thorsten Kusters display their trophies

Having led from the first day the German pairing of Jens Koschnick and Thorsten Kusters went on to win the World Pairs catching a combined weight of 189.905kg over the five days.

Cullys Shore Fishing in very difficult conditions at Cully’s Shore on Garadice Lake. Despite this James Place (closest to camera) caught a section-topping 12.900kg, and Chris VanderVliet (to James Place’s right) caught 12.025kg.

On the final day on the 2016 edition of Lakelands and Inland Waterways’ World Pairs Angling Championships Jens and Thorsten had a 20kg lead in the Pairs, while Jens was hanging on to a narrow 4kg advantage in the individual Daiwa Cup. Conditions were far from ideal. Anglers were confronted by stormy lake shores that looked more surf beaches, but some good weights were managed none the less.

Conditions at Connolly’s Shore were no easier, although at least the wind was to the anglers’ backs

The expectation was that that it was going to be tight at the top as Rod Scott and Michael Buchwalder headed to a section with the opportunity to post far better weights than our German friends.  Despite their best efforts they still finished over 15kg behind the winners. Last year’s winners Phil and Steve Ringer made a sensational bid for a podium finish and managed to jump 6 teams to take 3rd place this year.
