Good sea trout on Currane, Liam Ellis wins CnR competition

Joe Murphy ( the local postman) wins the Ernest Appleby Memorial Cup, awarded for the longest fish caught in the annual Lough Currane catch and release competition. Presented by Vincent Appleby

Guide Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane where sea trout fishing has been excellent at times…

7/9/16 There was some action reported on Lough Currane in the C&R department. Mr. David Burton, had 3 Sea Trout to his fly rod, ranging from Junior class up to 2 lbs. all while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com. Now we cut across the lake to the South side. Mr. John Delap, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com  caught 3 Juniors to his fly rod and just for the record, yesterday he caught two fine Sea Trout both in the 2lbs. Class. Now we head back across the Lake to the North side, William, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 6 Sea Trout to his fly rod ranging from Junior class up to 3 lbs. and in Neil’s backdate department, yesterday, Mr. Enrico Fantasia of Dublin, caught 4 Sea Trout to his fly rod. Wind South fresh with good cloud cover and again very humid.

8/9/16 Lough Currane was like the wild West with strong SW blowing down the lake. This didn’t deter anglers from manipulating their flies across the water and hoping to entice a wild Atlantic Salmon or one of Lough Currane premier Sea Trout. Alas at the end of their day my Noble Anglers morale was wilted until they headed for the Bar and the pints floated down and they spoke amongst themselves of the one that got away. Now back to the weather, wind as already stated,  just for the record it made a fair bit of rain today, the total amount of rainfall so far this month is 36.8 mm. Tomorrow is Lough Currane fly competition and sadly I won’t be able t to take photos of all the participating anglers, sorry for this.

9/9/16 The  2016 annual  Sea Trout Catch and Release Fly-fishing Competition on Lough Currane was brought to an abrupt standstill today and for good reason, there was one almighty storm from the SW, raging across the Lake and all the anticipating  anglers could only do was look on and the decision to cancel today’s action was swiftly taken and because of this it will be a one day event, so rock on tomorrow and the forecast isn’t too bad.

10/9/16 My net is down  but here are the results of yesterday’s catch and Release competition.

1st. Mr Liam Ellis.
2nd. Joe Murphy.
Joint 3rd Mr. Paul Lawton and Mr. Eddie Blanch.

The annual  2016 ‘Currane Championship’ Waterville’s Sea Trout Catch and Release Fly-fishing Competition, organised this year by The Waterville Lakes & Rivers Trust, was in full swing. In the hired out boat department of www.Lakelandshouse.com, Mr. Noel Bennett from Dublin with his Son Conall caught 9 Juniors. Also in good form in his hired out boat from www.lakelandshouse.com was Mr. Martin Kearney caught a nice few Juniors up to 1 ¾ lbs. Mr. Greg Long was in excellent form with 24 Juniors. Mr. John Doyle, who also was in good form with his fly rod, caught 6 Juniors. Staying in the hired out Boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. Stefan Kuth and his good friend Werner, caught 6 Juniors. Now we head up to the upper Lakes and Lough Derriana, Mr. Graham Elswood and Mr. Bill Hayse, while fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea ofwww.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 7 Sea Trout up to 5 ½ lbs. and all released. So you can say without any fear of contradiction all Anglers were satisfied with their performances. Special thanks to The Sea Lodge Hotel for their great dinner and looking after all we anglers. So on behalf of the Waterville Lakes & Rivers Trust Thank you for a great night.

11/9/16 Lough Currane was at a standstill with gale force winds from the SSE and if there were any boats out they have failed to report their catches or their losses.

12/9/16 In the C&R department, Mr. Billy Dickson of Bristol while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught 4 Juniors. Staying withe the C&R department, Mr.Graham Ellwood while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 9 Sea Trout up to 2 lbs. Wind West light to calm. Now we cut across the lake to the South Side and the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. Noel Ross and his good friend, from Dublin, while fly fishing on the drift, caught 4 Seatrout ranging from junior class up to 2 1/2 lbs.

13/9/16 Mr. Arnold Slater, while fishing with his Gillie Mr Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught 1 Seatrout to his fly rod of 2 1/2 lbs. . Wind N light with bright sunshine all day.

That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.

Sea trout OK, but salmon still poor on Laune

Billy Downes of the Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association reports:

As of Monday 12th September the Laune is heading to 2m on the gauge – a bit on the high side but now running clear. It should be perfect for the next two weeks provided there is no more rain.

No news of salmon landed but some good fresh sea trout still taking salmon flies. (Stoats Tail) The best I heard of was 2.5lbs. There are fish to be seen at least over the past week, we live in hope that a few fresh ones might join them and that the ones that are there decide to ‘come out to play’.

Prospects: Provided the rain stops conditions will be ideal for remainder of season.

Billy Downes,  Secretary
Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association

Bandon water levels suit fly and spinner, salmon to 14lb caught

Jason Nash from the Bandon Angling Association reports on the catches and conditions on the River Bandon…

Coloured salmon like this should be handled carefully and released safely

Decent water levels  resulted in good numbers of salmon being caught last week. Fly anglers enjoyed most of the sport however most fish were stale and in the river quite a while. Some fresh salmon were running but in very low numbers.

Heavy rain over the last few days has seen the Bandon flowing at an excellent level for fishing. Good numbers of salmon were caught since the flood dropped away on both fly and spinner. Some fresh bars of silver up to 14lb were reported on Sunday and Monday but they are not easy to find! Very good water levels should remain for the next few days at least.

One angler had three fish on fly, all released, yesterday. The salmon, which were quite red, weighed in at 4, 12 & 14lb. Alan Cronin also caught and released one fish.

Not many people have seen the gudgeon fish, Irish Examiner

The gudgeon is a fairly widespread Irish freshwater fish but not many people have seen one. They’re quite pretty with a silvery, streamlined body, large spots on the flanks and an odd-shaped head with two whiskers, properly called barbels, hanging down from the mouth. They’re adapted to living on the gravel at the bottom of fast streams, though they’re occasionally found in slow-flowing or still water. They pass unnoticed because they’re small…

Angling Notes: Irish Wheelchair Association’s fishing day, Irish Times

I was delighted to accept an invitation to attend the annual Irish Wheelchair Association fishing day, now in its 12 year, on the Grand Canal last week. The view from the 12th Lock Bridge at Lucan was a sight to behold as 29 teams, each with four competitors, took up positions along the banks of the canal. Weather conditions were excellent and the craic and camaraderie mighty as I chatted with groups along the canal walk. Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) had supplemented the stretch with 500 rudd, but the fish played hardball…

Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Dublin Angling Initiative (DAI) recently hosted its first nighttime fishing event at Meadow View Fisheries in Maynooth, Co Kildare. A group of young people from Sphere 17 youth group in Darndale attended the event and fished for six hours from 7pm until 2am, enjoying good catches of roach, rudd and perch. Nighttime angling equipment and techniques were introduced to the young people, who took little time to master the pursuit. During the event, the DAI also provided a barbecue to feed the hungry anglers…

AMENITY MOUNTAINBIKE TRAIL COULD DAMAGE WATER AND WILDLIFE IN SLIEVE BLOOMS

There is a spoke in the wheel of Coillte’s planned Slieve Bloom mountain bike trali because of the impact it could have on rivers and protected wildlife. The application for the €4 million bike trail is on hold by Laois and Offaly county councils, since both sought further information from Coillte Teoranta last May. The most serious obstacle is how Coillte will prevent a proposed sewage treatment station from leaking, with Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) wanting waste water to be removed completely from the mountain, to ensure no risk…
