Dr Frances Lucy has been appointed as the new Head of Department of Environmental Science at Institute of Technology, Sligo. She succeeds Dr Billy Fitzgerald who has recently retired from the role. Dr Lucy is a native of Cork, and has been living in Drumkeerin, County Leitrim since she first joined the Institute in 1992. Lough Derg RNLI was requested to launch by Valentia Coast Guard yesterday evening (Sunday 4 September) to assist a fisherman whose boat was wedged inside a rocky shoal. At 5.50pm, the inshore lifeboat launched with helm Eleanor Hooker, Liam Knight and Keith Brennan on board. Winds were east-southeasterly Force 2 and visibility was good. The lifeboat located the vessel in Youghal Bay, and the fisherman on board was found safe and wearing his lifejacket… Afloat, 05/09/16. The 37th Lough Melvin Open Trout Championships was again an outstanding success with more than 300 competitors from across Ireland, Scotland and the UK seeking to outwit their rivals in this four-day team event of top-class angling. While Melvin is unique in its selection of trout species, which include sonaghan, gillaroo, ferox and brown trout, the championships focused solely on the sonaghan. This year’s Junior All Ireland Championships took place at Killykeen Forest Park followed by the Inter-Provincial Team Championships next day. The event provided the opportunity for young anglers to compete in a National Championships before progressing to senior level. An estimated 240 competitors will hope to reel in some success this November when they flock to Wexford’s coastline for the 2016 World Shore Angling Championships. Teams of anglers from countries across the globe will compete over a full week on beaches dotted along the Wexford coast. 06 Sep: Super fish for Dominic Henderson today. 74cm and getting close to a double figure fish. Quality seems to be replacing quantity with four to the boat this morning.
Ray Martin had 9 bass over 2 tides and a few inches of rain
05 Sep: There are good sides and bad sides about everyone. Ray Martin’s bad side is every time I fish with him, the heavens open up and we get drenched to the skin. However, he does have two good sides. One is he is about the soundest blokes you are ever likely to meet and number two is those big bass don’t half love him! Managed to land nine over two tides. Getting tougher.

01 Sep: A few fish again today. The strong wind made it challenging at times but still managed seven. Jennifer Lee is delighted with her first bass. May it be the first of many. Well done Jen!

05 Sep: While wife Penny was enjoying some of the lovely walks on the Beara, Gary Evans was concentrating more on its fishy residents. Ever the keen angler he was up early on some morning to catch as many as 16 pollack before breakfast. He caught one nice bass in stormy conditions when he saw a few fish showing, but sadly lost a couple of equally good fish.
Mike with his PB pollack – 9lb 6oz
31 Aug: Kev, his brother and father Mike had top pollacking during their stay, managing 2 new PBs of 11lb 1oz for Kev and 9lb 6oz for his dad. They also another 9lb fish and 3 more at 8lb. Overall they caught more than 20 fish over 6lb.
On the last half day they fished the Airport in flat calm and very bright conditions. No ray were caught but they had fish most casts. Mostly lsd but we also had several huss to 7lb.
Rory and Keith were down from the North for a few days and found some nice fish.Mark had some great pollack fishing
27 Aug: That lure fisherman ‘extraordinaire’, Mark Noble was down from Dublin for a few days and as well as catching some good pollack and wrasse also had a try at the Beara’s bass population.
