There was no change at the top of the leader board as German anglers Jens Koschnick and Thorsten Kusters continue to keep the top spot. Their running total now stands at over 136kg, 20kg ahead of their nearest competitors.  There was a shakeup for second place though as Dean Barlow and Steve Fleming leap frogged from 5th to challenge the German’s dominance.

Thorsten, Jens and Steve are currently 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Daiwa Cup standings.

The wind was up yesterday and Garadice’s Connolly Shore had quite a chop. Most chose the feeder there but Mark Pollard managed to fish the pole to great effect, getting a good stamp of hybrid that saw him win the section with a 4kg margin.

Sphere 17 Youth Group from Darndale enjoy night fishing trip with Inland Fisheries Ireland's Dublin Angling Initiative

Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Dublin Angling Initiative recently hosted its first night time fishing event at Meadow View Fisheries, Maynooth, Co. Kildare.  A group of young people from Sphere 17 youth group in Darndale attended the event and fished for six hours from 7pm until 2am.

The group enjoyed good catches of roach, rudd and perch. Night time fishing equipment and techniques were introduced to the young people who took little time to master the pursuit. During the event, the Dublin Angling Initiative also provided a barbeque to feed the hungry anglers.

Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Dublin Angling Initiative aims to promote, develop and improve angling in the greater Dublin area. During the summer months, young people from national and secondary schools, summer projects and youth services are taken out on fishing courses. To date, thousands of young people have been introduced to sea, coarse and game angling and the initiative has been a catalyst in setting up fishing clubs for many of these young people.

Oisin Cahill, Co-Coordinator of the Dublin Angling Initiative at Inland Fisheries Ireland said: “Night Fishing is an entirely different type of fishing which the group from Sphere 17 had not experienced previously. We were delighted to show them the techniques required and provide them with the right equipment to enable them to try it out. The Dublin Angling Initiative aims to engage young people around angling and show them that it can be a hobby enjoyed at any age or any ability. Feedback on the night was very positive and another such event is already being planned.

The Dublin Angling Initiative also aims to provide information and generate awareness among young people around conservation and protection of our natural fisheries resource. Angling is a pursuit which can have positive impact on our health and well-being, while in turn we promote understanding of the importance of ensuring this resource is available to many generations to come.”

The Dublin Angling Initiative welcomes enquiries from all groups or individuals interested in its programmes and services. For further information, visit www.fisheriesireland.ie or contact Oisin Cahill, Dublin Angling Initiative Co-Coordinator by emailing oisin.cahill@fisheriesireland.ie .

Good shark fishing in Galway, as Bailey pulls the trigger

John Fleming, skipper of the Brazen Hussy II is enjoying some good shark fishing at the moment with his guests. Fishing out of Rossaveal offers quick access to the shark grounds west of Aran, and on Sunday they had 9 blues to the boat, ranging in size from a baby of 10lbs to a decent shark of 88lbs.

John says he expects the season to until the end of October at least, and he has a good few dates still available. To enquire about booking a day afloat, give him a call at 087 7571320.

An unusual catch was also sent in this week by Michael Webster, who says his nephew Bailey (13), from Co. Antrim was fishing near Rosroe in Killary Harbour recently, when a trigger fish took his mackerel strip bait and gave him a good scrap before being landed. Trigger fish have been turning up in increasing numbers in Cork and Kerry over recent years, although they are still virtually unheard of this far north, so well done to Bailey. Apologies for the blurry photo but the fish is nice and sharp!

Yet another Courtmacsherry porbeagle caught on 31 August

Mark Gannon reports that his anglers are getting good fishing with bass, congers, ling and more featuring in the catches. There was even another porbeagle last week. He’s getting quite a run of these fearsome sharks considering their long absence for the area.
Nice bass for Kristof before breakfast
A nice bass from one of the small boats for Kristof before breakfast was a great way to mark the start of September

The weather has made the sea a little lumpy at times and fishing in comfort is not always possible but getting amongst good cod more than makes up for a bit of being tossed about.

Blue sharks and porbeagle for Kit and Crew from Kilmore Quay

Alan Ball and Kit with another shark

Kit Dunne has been trying hard to further develop the east coast shark angling product. In particular he is trying to establish the possibility of regular porbeagle fishing. Last week he brought out a willing crew from Kilmore Quay to to do a bit of test fishing. They left early on the morning of 27 August  in perfect conditions heading for the Celtics Deeps, about 30 miles offshore. Travelling and drinking coffee they were thrilled to see porpoises, dolphins and even minke whales. When they started fishing things only got better.

Kit tells us, “Alan Ball and his crew had 24 Blue Shark and a Porbeagle on Saturday with me. Has to be one of my most memorable days ever, on top of the shark we saw Porpoise, Minkie whales, Tuna on the feed and loads of Dolphins along side throughout the day and on the way home.”

Good fishing in Shannon Estuary and off Clare coast last week

John dory
John dory

Last week it was all sharks, tope, cod and pollack for anglers with Luke Aston on the Clare Dragoon. There were also a few good ling and even a John Dory. Amongst the sharks was another porbeagle. This year porbeagles are showing signs of a come back along the south and west coasts which is really good news.

Yesterday Luke and his crew were getting lots of mackerel at the Loop. They tried the six Gill mark but couldn’t get the through the shoals of Spurdogs swarming all over it.

The weather kept Luke in the estuary on 30 August but the Tope fishing showed good fresh hard fighting fish.

Sean Maguire’s anglers on the Lady Gwen were mostly over the reefs last week, where they enjoyed the pollacking. Drifts over other ground saw gurnards, and spurdogs keeping the boat busy.

Podcast: The Rivers Dodder and Poddle, This Island Nation

Join Tom MacSweeney to listen to the latest edition of his THIS ISLAND NATION radio programme where you can hear of the sparkling history of the Rivers Poddle and Dodder, the horrors which befell the crew of a Cobh square-rigger as she sailed home to Cork Harbour from the West Indies. The residents of the often-neglected offshore islands are not happy with the health services provided to the islands and anglers are told to wear lifejackets to save their lives… all part of the programme mix.

Ocean warming affecting fish stocks and crop yields
Ocean warming affecting fish stocks and crop yields, Irish Examiner

The warming of the world’s oceans is spreading dangerous diseases and affecting fish stocks and crop yields, a major new report has warned. Conservationists warned the world is “completely unprepared for” the impacts of warming oceans on wildlife, natural systems and humans, some of which are already being felt. Even with action to significantly reduce the greenhouse gas emissions which are causing ocean warming, there will still be a high risk of impacts…
