A good flood gave anglers a chance to catch salmon from Owenea Fishery

Lindsey Clarke reports from Owenea Fishery – Monday 1st  to Sunday 7th August 2016.

The Owenea ran at low levels at the start and end of the week but we received good floods on Wednesday (0.48m), Thursday (0.39m) and Friday (0.33m). The gauge average for the week was good reading 0.26m. The river was reasonably well attended with 48 visiting rods fishing for the week. There was not a huge run of grilse for the week it would seem but rods did report reasonable catches of salmon caught mainly on the days of the good floods. Given here are some of the catches taken from the Fishery Catch Register. On Wednesday, Billy Blair recorded 2 grilse weighing 3lb each caught and released on a fly rom beat 8.

On Thursday, Hugh Frazer recorded a 5½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 4. Bill Murray reported 2 grilse weighing 4 & 6lb caught on a fly from beat 5. Dessie Coyle logged a 5lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 7 and Jim Mclean accounted for 2 grilse weighing 4lb each caught on a spinner from beat 8. On Friday, Dessie Coyle recorded a 6lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 7. On Saturday, Billy Blair reported a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 8. The forecast for the coming week is for more unsettled and wet weather and we expect there to be good water levels at periods over the week

Hard work for the anglers on Lough Melvin

Lindsey Clarke reports from LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 1st  to Sunday 7th August 2016.

Lough Melvin was fairly quiet this week. It seems there was very little salmon angling effort. A few rods reported decent fishing for Sonaghan on some days but fish had to be worked for and were not ‘hanging themselves’!

Not much angling effort on the Drowes

Lindsey Clarke reports from the RIVER DROWES – Monday 1st  to Sunday 7th August 2016.

The river gradually fell as the week progressed and by the end of Sunday the river had fell to 0.41m on the gauge at the Four Master Bridge. The river was fairly quiet and it was mainly the rods staying in the Fishery accommodations that were fishing. There were around 10 grilse recorded for the week to various methods from various pools.

It’s not every day of the week an angler can boast a catch of 12 trout, particularly when it happens to be finals day of the World Cup Fly Fishing championships. Lake users are being advised that harmful algae blooms have been spotted on Lough Derg again recently. The blue-green algae can produce harmful toxins and contact can lead to skin irritation. It typically appears in July, usually during warm, damp weather conditions. The Lough Derg Science Group reports that up until last week the lake was unusually free of these nuisance species. In fact, lake water clarity in 2016 has been better than in any of the previous 15 years…

Investigating the impact of escaped farmed salmon on wild Irish Atlantic salmon populations is one of five UCC projects which has been awarded €8.5m in Government funding today. A co-led project brings the UCC figure to €9.3m. Pike and Perch Galore on Lough Erne for Members of the French Predator Fishing Team

Getting Around Lough Erne is no Problem for Pascal's Bass Boats

Within the last few weeks Pascal Brissaud was proud to host three members of the French predator fishing team at Watermill Lodge on the shores of Lough Erne. This was the lads first time in Ireland and the trip did not disappoint. In a few days the lads fishing lower and upper Lough Erne they caught and released 70 pike to 95cm and literally 100’s of perch the best of which measured 35cm. Favoured techniques included vertical jigging and drop-shot techniques as well as the usual hard and soft lures. The best fish of the trip was taken on a small 2″ jig.

If you fancy some fishing on Lough Erne with Pascal Brissaud he can be contacted at http://www.bigpikefishingireland.co.uk/

Owen Kelly, IFI Assistant Inspector for the North Western River Basin District recently hosted a river walk for the Donegal Association of An Taisce.  The event was attended by 57 people including members from local angling clubs in Glenties and Ardara. Many topics were covered during the evening including the life cycles of various fish well as habitats and species. A demonstration on electro fishing and kick sampling was carried out and everyone had the opportunity to view macro invertebrates up close with the aid of field microscopes.

The group also examined a sample from the Laghey River and compared it to one from the Owenea River, noting the abundance and diversity of the sample in Laghey compared to Owenea due to the relative acidity and natural productivity of the two rivers.
