Another Monster sixgill shark for the Clare Dragoon. This one was 3.5m and estimated to weigh 700lb
Luke Aston of the Clare Dragoon reports on the last few days charter fishing…
One of the smaller skate that was landed before release
We fished Thursday (14 July) mostly at anchor and got a few Spurdogs, and Bullhuss. Koen had 3 Skate the best of which was about 150lbs and released at the side of the boat. The group finished up their trip on Friday with a breezy day in the estuary. We got a few nice Tope though.
Tope in the Estuary are a handy fall back when its too windy on the Atlantic
Back on a day charter on Saturday. Plenty mackerel pollack and coalies. On Sunday I had a team of anglers start their week’s angling holiday. It was another milestone for us here. For the ninth year in a row we have had at least one Six Gill shark to the boat. Sunday was Bob’s turn and he had one at 3.5 m and over 700lbs. Bob wins Catch of the Week for this monster fish. The trouble is they came for 5 days fishing….what do I do now for the other 4? It turns out plenty. What weather they gort on monday. Our best fish a this 60 plus Skate. Garry also had another slightly smaller one.
Another Monster sixgill shark for the Clare Dragoon. This one was 3.5m and estimated to weigh 700lb
Yesterday we did a double day and fished into the dark. We had 5 skate averaging about 70lbs. We also had another Six Gill to the boat but it shook the hook as soon as it surfaced and headed right back down.

Kieran Conlon landed and returned four grilse on the Laune on Sunday
Billy Downes reports that as of Monday 18th July the Laune is up to a beautiful for all methods 1.3m and falling slowly. The river should remain very fishable for the rest of the week. Angling effort has been high during the past week and a good few fish were landed. Grilse fishing over the weekend was good, especially on Sunday, but you still had to get the timing and techniques right on all methods especially fly fishing. As mentioned in last week’s report Danny Joy encountered not one but two fish that would make any season memorable for a fly angler. On Monday last at Breen’s he played a fish away into double figures for three minutes but lost it. An hour later he was again into a double figure fish this time he landed it, a fish of 11.5 lbs both on the fly.
Danny Joy had an 11.5lb salmon at John BreensMatt Standen’s salmon
Matt Standen having met and lost a good few fish over the past few months finally landed one of two fish he met on Wednesday.
Colm Heffernan had a great fish on Sunday of about 12 lbs and Billy Downes(!) opened his account for the year with a grilse of 5 lbs on the fly. About 20 fish were reported for the week. There were salmon and grilse see running the river each day especially over days when nets are off. There is a distinct pattern to the year now. On Saturday Sunday and Mondays there is a much greater chance of seeing a fish or meeting a fish – no commercial nets.
Beat 3: The Beat is producing a few fish each week. The Brown trout fishing continues good. Please note that the €10 trout permit allows an angler to fish for brown trout ‘fly only’ If you want to spin or worm fish you need to purchase a €25 permit.
Prospects: Judging by fish seen running the river there has to be a good chance on all methods in this beautiful water for the rest of the week. For further up to date information look up: www.launeanglersfishing.com

The River Ilen is a medium size spate river that fishes best on a dropping flood for both salmon and sea trout. Spinning, worm and fly fishing are the methods used and allowed on club water.
The river is beautiful and a joy to fish, pools along club waters are easily accessible with seats, steps and stiles put in place for the anglers comfort. With selective tree pruning done along the river in recent years fly fishing has become a more available option especially on the lower river with numerous pools opened up to suit fly fishermen, night time fly fishing for sea trout is a pleasure with great stocks of trout entering the river from April.
Eileen Carroll from the Macroom office reports that for the for the week ending 17 July, 28 salmon were landed for the week, mostly caught at the Kingsley weir, best 10lbs on a shrimp by a local angler.
ESB FISHERY INNISCARRA
5 fish recorded for the week. 3 anglers from Antrim had a salmon each caught on shrimp weighing 6lbs, 9.5lbs and 10lbs. 2 peel caught and returned by local anglers

Inniscarra Fishery
This salmon fishery is located between Cork City and the dam at Inniscarra (9 miles). The fishery is run by the ESB (Electricity Supply Board) and an ESB permit is required. There is a fair run of fish with a very good grilse run dependent on water. Permits can be purchased on site from Dan O’Riordan, ESB Inniscarra; 087-9983879.

Guide Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane where the next generation shows the older ones how it is done…
14/7/16 Lough Currane took a day off in the rod bender department, in other words the manipulating anglers failed in all departments. Wind SW light to fresh and overcast with rain this evening.
Mr. Michael Wright caught his salmon trolling
15/7/6 There was good manipulating in all departments on the Waterville fishery today so straight to the action. We start at the Bungalow on the North Side of Lough Currane, UK angler Mr. Michael Wright, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a fine 5 1/2 lbs. Salmon on the troll. Now to the fly department, Kilkenny angler, Mr. Tom Nugent, caught a fine 4 lbs. Grilse on the fly, while fishing with his Gillie. Now for fish of the day and in the anglers own words, Northern Ireland angler, Mr. Andrew Wishart, I caught a 6 ½ lbs. specimen Sea Trout, on the fly on Lough Derriana with my Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com. Wind W and strong and overcast with misty rain.
16/7/16 We start and finish in the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com. Mr. Owen McBride, caught 2 Juniors on the drift to his boat and last but not least, Northern Ireland anglers, Ronnie and Gary, caught 4 Juniors on the drift in their hired out boat also from www.lakelandshouse.com. The rest of my Noble Anglers failed in all departments and the least said about their skills the better. What’s that I hear you say, what about your own skills! Point taken. When will I learn to keep my mouth shut! Wind West fresh and overcast with mist rain at times.
17/7/16 Waterville and Caherdaniel Postmen, Mr. Joe Murphy, puts the post to one side today, so he can deliver the killer Trout fly and that’s exactly what Joe did and within a few casts, his fly rod was bent double into a fine Sea Trout of 1 ¾ lbs. Not bad for his first day out this Season. Northern Ireland Angler Mr. Malcolm Davidson, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught one Junior to his rod and sportingly returned his Junior. Wind West light and overcast with light misty rain.
As calm as it gets
18/7/16 My Noble Anglers were smothering their faces with suntan lotion than changing their flies today and for good reason. There was no wind to talk of and blazing sunshine all day. As you can see by the photo they had little to no chance of enticing a Lough Currane Premier Sea Trout or a Wild Atlantic salmon.
19/7/16 Things were real hot out on Lough Currane today. Sadly it wasn’t the fishing but the weather and in the words of Local Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and I quote, “No good just hot”. Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com tells us it was no good; wind all over the place. There was some relief rom the World famous Butler Pool, www.watervillegolflinks.ie, where UK angler Mr. James Henchey, caught a fine Salmon on the fly in the 5 lbs class.
Mr. James Henchey had success on the Butlers Pool when anglers on the lake had nothing to reprot
20/7/16 Lough Currane was on the quiet side in all departments, as all my Noble lake anglers failed miserably in their duties and with a light gentle breeze from the SW then veered NW one would have thought there would be some action. One can only come to one conclusion that their presentation has a lot to be desired. On that not we head down stream to the world Famous Butler Pool, www.watervillegolflinks.ie, and to an angler that when he presents his fly, there is only one outcome and that is UK angler Mr James Henchey, who caught a fine 6lbs. Salmon and Guided by Mr Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and at watervilleboats@gmail.com
That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.
The rivers and lakes of Waterville drain a large catchment and are regarded by many as the foremost Salmon and Sea-Trout fishery in the country. The lake system is well developed with access to boats and guides being readily available to the tourist angler. The Sea-Trout caught here are renowned for their size and quantity. Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery
Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.
Irelands biggest and longest running one-day coarse angling event.

The River Fane has been very low and clear over the last few weeks and in bad need of some water. So the few days rain was very welcome indeed and raised the water level just enough to get the trout moving and feeding again. The river was in really great condition and there were plenty of olives about during the day and on the mild evenings. One of the north-easts top guides Eamonn Conway visited the Fane on a wet and dreary afternoon recently but none of that mattered as the fishing was nothing short of spectacular. With the rain pelting down Eamonns’ mastery of nymph fishing techniques produced some fantastic fishing and fish. In a short 2 hour session, Eamonn caught and released 14 wild brown trout the best of which was just over three pounds in weight. Many of the trout measured 10 to 12 inches and all fish were taken on nymphs tied by Eamonn on barbless hooks. The Fane is a spectacular river and well worth a visit especially if you are looking for wild brown trout on the fly.

Bandon Angling Assoc - A bright, fresh grilse ready for release. The condition of fish, even if some are small, has been excellent.
Eileen Carroll Murphy IFI reports from the River Bandon for the week ended Sunday 17th July 2016:
Salmon fishing improved greatly last week after a small flood on Sunday 10th. There were about 20 fish landed on the Monday alone with many more lost. One angler reported having hooked 5 fish on the fly. Many of these fish were very sportingly released. Most of the fish were grilse but there were a few salmon reported as well. The flood tapered off very quickly but there are still good numbers of salmon about.
Bandon Angling Assoc – A bright, fresh grilse ready for release. The condition of fish, even if some are small, has been excellent.
The Bandon Angling Association are delighted with the beautiful summer they are currently enjoying in West Cork!! Yesterday saw temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius and as a result the river has dropped back to a very low summer level. However, this has not deterred the salmon and they still continue to run. Most fish caught are grilse in the 3-6lb range but big MSW salmon continue to make an appearance as an 18lb fish was caught and released during the week by an angler spinning. Methods producing best results at the moment are shrimp and worm.
With the help of our guides, visitor Mr. Peter Cederfeld from Denmark caught this beautiful salmon in glorious sunshine yesterday
