The River Fane has been very low and clear over the last few weeks and in bad need of some water. So the few days rain was very welcome indeed and raised the water level just enough to get the trout moving and feeding again. The river was in really great condition and there were plenty of olives about during the day and on the mild evenings. One of the north-easts top guides Eamonn Conway visited the Fane on a wet and dreary afternoon recently but none of that mattered as the fishing was nothing short of spectacular. With the rain pelting down Eamonns’ mastery of nymph fishing techniques produced some fantastic fishing and fish. In a short 2 hour session, Eamonn caught and released 14 wild brown trout the best of which was just over three pounds in weight. Many of the trout measured 10 to 12 inches and all fish were taken on nymphs tied by Eamonn on barbless hooks. The Fane is a spectacular river and well worth a visit especially if you are looking for wild brown trout on the fly.
