From the banks of the River Feale, Paddy Halpin, IFI Limerick, reports on the fishing last week…

After a good flood on the Feale on Monday we had a lot of anglers out from Tuesday and a good number of fish reported caught for the week.

The River Feale is among the outstanding salmon and sea trout rivers of Ireland. The River rises in the mountain district of North Co Cork and flows westerly for 75 km (46 miles) through the county towns of Abbeyfeale and Listowel and enters the sea south of Ballybunion. For the final 10 kms (6 miles) of its course, it is known as the Cashen River. Throughout its meandering journey to the sea it flows through a picturesque landscape of heather bog land, fertile valleys and rolling hills. Its main tributaries, flowing from both North and South, combine to add in excess of 160 kms (100 miles) of fishable waters.

About 50% of the main River Feale and the Smearlagh River is controlled by 5 angling clubs. These clubs are some of the best angling waters and each club offers day tickets for visiting anglers.

Brown tag fishery:  Please note that for 2016 the River Feale is designated as a brown tag fishery. Anglers must affix a brown tag along with a blue tag to any salmon which is retained. This means that salmon retained on the River Feale will have two tags attached. Brown tags will issue from IFI officers ONLY for the 2016 season.  Please ring 087-7639236 to arrange to receive your first brown tag.

  • Additional brown tags will only be issued by IFI staff, they may be contacted at 087-7639236 and they will arrange to meet and issue an additional tag upon verification that the previous brown tag has been used, i.e. a fish has been caught and recorded in the logbook.
  • 1 brown tag will be issued at a time to each angler.
  • If an angler has used his brown tag or doesn’t have a brown tag in his possession to use then he must fish catch and release methods, i.e. single barbless hook and no worms.
  • Brown tags will continue to be issued until the angling quota is reached.
National Regulations apply and are available online.

Irish Angling Update – 14 July 2016

Dunbrody Festival
Oaklands Fishery where Enda Minogue had 175 lb to win the Dunbrody Festival

The Irish summer continues, bringing rain, gales and more. The weather is cooler now and some evenings even feel a little cold. There was sunshine to be had in places, though not enough to do any permanent damage to the fishing…

Lovely water on the Drowes last week meant that despite a lower than expected angling attendance some 65 salmon were caught. Anglers on Lough Melvin didn’t benefit from the numbers of salmon about due to strong winds. Fishing on the Owenea was fairly good and  around 20 salmon caught, particularly after Thursday’s and the weekend’s rain. Ballisodare fished well with 167 salmon landed, 52 of which were released. The Moy system accounted for a reported catch of 517 salmon for the week. Salmon were caught right throughout the system from Ballina to the East Mayo water. Sea trout anglers on the Moy estuary are said to be having one their best seasons in years, despite difficult weather conditions at times. Excellent sea trout fishing has also been reported on Carrowmore where anglers enjoyed some of the best sea trout fishing there in recent years.  The past week saw very good numbers of sea trout moving into the system including some cracking fish in the 3 lb to 5 lb bracket. One pair of anglers had over 50 fish in 2 days. At Delphi there were 12 salmon reported and sea trout numbers were, again, very encouraging. The salmon catch at Lough Inagh is, so far, above average – a relief given the prolonged drought experienced at the fishery last month. At Costello and Fermoyle decent numbers of grilse are in the system and apart from their 6 salmon, one group of anglers had 41 sea trout. Fishing is still going strong in Galway and 108 fish recorded for the week. Water levels are still at one gate open, and a lot of fish are showing in the river.

The Feale fished well last week before its levels dropped again. While the water lasted some great salmon to 14lbs were landed. Staying in the Kingdom, good runs of salmon have been observed on the Laune and some lovely fish were caught. Fly is the most popular method at the moment. Lough Currane and the upper lakes had some great fishing and when the winds were too high the River Inny provided a sporting refuge. In total 22 sea trout and 14 salmon to double figures were reported. The rains brought some great runs of fish in to West Cork’s rivers last week and 30 salmon to 1olb were landed on the Ilen alone. The Bandon had about 30 salmon to the high teens.  Finally, the good run of salmon on the Munster Blackwater continues and Fortwilliam Fishery says July looks like being a record month at the fishery.

It was a week of contradictions on Lough Sheelin as some trout anglers reported continuous blanks with nothing much happening  while others enthused about good fishing and plenty of action with sedges. Most of the angling successes are a twilight affair. Angling activity is quiet enough of late on Lough Corrib, but things are picking up with hatches of sedges and mayfly, and good hopper fishing to be had on many areas of the lake. Brown trout fishing has also picked up on Lough Arrow with some nice fish being caught, mainly on wet flies.

This blue came in at 220cm
This blue shark was estimated to weigh 115lb and wins Catch of the Week for Declan Kilgannon

The Irish Bass Festival was fished at the start of the month and 110 anglers took part. Catches this year were excellent and fishing was good from both the rocks and estuaries. The majority of the fish caught were in the 50-65cm bracket but the top 3 fish were all over 70cm. Shore anglers along the Wexford coasts are still getting smoothhounds on the night tides, but these were some of the smaller fish we ever saw photographed. Charter boats in Cork are reporting plenty of blue sharks in the area. Wreck fishing out of Kinsale is producing really good codling, coalfish and ling with megrim on the muddier grounds. Courtmacsherry is also getting a good mix of shark and wreck fishing. Skate are about in good numbers and good sizes, particularly in the Union Hall area. As an aside, one boat caught the same skate 3 times in the last few weeks – a testament to good fish handling if ever there was one.  At Valentia reef fishing seems to have been particularly productive while anglers off the Clare coast enjoyed catching tope and spurdogs as well as pollack and wrasse on the reefs. At Mullaghmore on Donegal Bay it was blue sharks that grabbed the anglers’ attention. Some great sharks to almost specimen length were landed. Catch of the week goes to one of these, caught by Declan Kilgannon – a beautifully coloured female just short of specimen length.

Anglers in the midlands area are getting good pike fishing lately. The fish were not huge but their numbers and enthusiasm for the lures made up for what they lacked in size. The recently fished Weir Cup on Derravaragh was won by a pike of 10lb 10oz. Meanwhile on Loughs Derg and Corrib bigger fish in the 100cm class are being caught.

At the Oaks Fishery in New Ross the Dunbrody Festival was won by Ireland Youths angler Enda Minogue who caught  a massive weight of 175 lb from the margins on peg 46. The Barrow is fishing well at the moment and bags to almost 40lb are being caught by pleasure anglers. Anglers staying at Melview Lodge found the fishing improved day by day as prebaiting really showed its worth. Good bream and tench were the reward for perseverance. Johnny McKinley won the Ballybay 2 Day Festival with 27.550kg at the weekend. The Ballybay 5 Day  Festival is being fished at the moment and Finnian Feeney had a whopping weight of 26.925kg yesterday, day 3 of the competition. Great weights are being reported on all sections of Lough Muckno on all methods in the run in to the two Irish opens and the July festival. One angler had 20kg on Sunday made up mainly of roach  from 6oz – 1 lb, several skimmers of 6oz to 1.5lb and a nice scattering of very decent hybrids.

Tomorrow is going to be warm and humid, with rain in the west according to Met Eireann. Saturday will be a mainly dry day with sunny spells. It will be another warm and humid day in many parts of the south and east with maximum temperatures of 19-22C, but it will be cooler in the north and west. Westerly winds will be light to moderate. Sunday is looking dry in many areas as well with a mix of cloud and sunshine. The warmest weather will be in the south and east again with temperatures around 20C and it will remain quite humid here as well. It will be a bit cooler in the west and north with a chance of some rain in coastal parts. Westerly winds will be mostly light.  The weather will remain changeable early next week, however there is a good chance of some more warm and dry weather in the east and south. The west and north are likely to stay cooler and duller with a higher chance of rain.

It should be a productive weekend for anyone with a rod in their hands, so get out there and go fishing!

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

A Carlsberg's day in West Cork where blues and skate to 196lbs made the day special

Tom Collins of Sea Angling Charters in Union Hall West Cork had a week of ‘skate mania’.
Tom describes the photos below as”Common Skate, Tag No. 47907 was caught by Izzak Bradley on June 27th, recaptured on July 3rd by Hans, and recaptured again today by Kees. This female fish was caught at three separate locations within 4 square miles and is a testament to how well we take care of our big fish, limiting the time they are out of water, and handled with best protocol. I understand how some people are against tagging of skate but the feedback is beyond what I expected!”

There’s not many places in Europe where you can catch Blue Shark and common Skate at the same time but Carlsberg invented the West Cork Workout we only perfected it
A real beauty on Monday weighing in at 193lb the biggest of 4 skate.

Blue sharks to specimen size for Donegal anglers

In the last week anglers on the Kiwi Girl fishing out out of Mullaghmore on Donegal Bay had some great blue shark fishing. Blues to around 220cm (total length) were caught on Tuesday. A few were knocking on specimens door (190cm fork length). Fish of 90 to 110lb were caught – fat sharks just missing the length but having the girth.

This blue came in at 220cm
This blue came in at 220cms the ‘Catch of the Week’ winner
Around 220cm - a good blue
Around 220cm total length- a good blue but but just short of specimen – 190cm Fork Length

More sharks were caught over the weekend and it was blue skies, blue sharks on Sunday. But on Monday it was tougher going, though sharks still came to the boat. Weather got the better of them on Tuesday but they were back out again on Wednesday and despite the conditions managed to catch.

Blues and 16lb ling for the Courtmachserry anglers

As winds ease, catches improve off Clare coast

Spurdog
the best spurdog on Clare Dragoon was just over 13lb and 110cm in length.

Luke Aston of the Clare Dragoon and Sean Maguire of Lady Gwen reports on the last few days charter fishing…

13 July

Spurdog
the best spurdog on Clare Dragoon was just over 13lb and 110cm in length.

The Clare Dragon showed her worth again today as they managed to fish in very fresh conditions. It did limit what they could do but with lots of mackerel for bait, the over shallower areas produced some good Spurdogs with the best a big, fat female of just over 13lb and 110cm in length.

Lady Gwen also got plenty of bait but fished more over some pollack grounds and sandy areas where red gurnards were accounted for.

12 July

Lady Gwen had a great bunch from the UK back fishing with them again, though this year there were a couple of new faces. They didn’t stray too far as it was a little bit choppy for the newcomers but a fun day’s fishing was enjoyed nonetheless with plenty of pollack caught.

Happy anglers on the Lady Gwen

Anglers on the Clare Dragoon were also out on pollack grounds where they enjoyed a busy day on the shads and pirks. Plenty of fish to be had!

11 July

A male tope on the Care Dragoon
A male tope on the Care Dragoon

The Clare Dragoon started today with a fresh NW wind and a crack at the Tope. Although the wind was dropping conditions were still not great as they anchored up. However some Tope in the boat and Frank had this fine male. In the afternoon we got a quick wrasse session in and then went after the Spurs. Plenty of them about and lots over double figures with the best being a 14lb specimen.

10 July

The Clare Dragoon was fishing in a gale of wind in the estuary today but we managed Thornback and Spotted Ray, Tub Gurnard, Conger, Bullhuss, Doggies and Mackerel. But we are hoping to get west again soon!!

08 July

Luke Aston on the Clare Draggon tells us he started today not sure if he would get out of the estuary as the forecast was giving the wind rising. As it happened they got a full day outside and got some good drifts in.

Great bags of fish on Muckno ahead of competitions

A good catch at Lough Muckno
he outstanding quality of the fish on the Concra wood stretch today, with none of the large number of Roach caught under 6ozs and some beautiful hybrids and skimmers making up a very satisfactory catch, at 11.5 metres in showery but modertate conditions.

Dick Caplice reports on the fishing at Lough Muckno…

09 July: On the run in to the two Irish opens and the July festival it is pleasing to find that the venue at lough Muckno is in top form, with great weights being reported on all sections and on all methods. Thursday saw Joe Kiernan and his friend Brian Hartley have a pleasure session on Concra Woods narrows where both chose to stick it out on the feeder with fine results, catching an abundance of small skimmers, some quality Roach, hybrids and not so small skimmers. Joe with 16 kg after 4 hours 30 minutes was just pipped by his fishing mate Brian who ended the session on 18kg.

A good catch at Lough Muckno
The outstanding quality of the fish on the Concra wood stretch today, with none of the large number of Roach caught under 6ozs and some beautiful hybrids and skimmers making up a very satisfactory catch, at 11.5 metres in showery but moderate conditions.

Today’s session for me on the pole on peg 71 saw just over 20kgs being netted and the stamp of fish is truly wonderful, with many Roach caught in the 6oz to 1 lb mark. This was topped with several skimmers in the 6oz to 1.5lb bracket and a nice scattering of very decent hybrids, for a thoroughly enjoyable day.

Upcoming events

The point of the exercise was to test the water before the main events calendar gets underway in style on saturday the 16th July with the Garda Irish Open followed on the 17th, by the IADA Irish open.

Monday the 18th, of course, sees the start of one of our flagship 5 day festivals “The July Festival” formerly known as the Muckno Mania Festival and a great event is in prospect, with top contenders from home and abroad, in the fray, as usual.
As the title of each of the former implies these events are open, to all native and visiting anglers male and female irrespective of affiliation or or indeed standard. These opens are a great opportunity to fish alongside the best the country has to offer and indeed the best that the significant travelling entourage brings here, as the festival circuit gets into top gear with the cream of the visiting raiders now on their way.
