Small boats and huge scores in inaugural Fingal competition – Irish Times

The inaugural Fingal Small Boat Competition, which took place last Sunday, September 6th, from Howth, was a fantastic success, with all 30 anglers from Balbriggan, Rush and Howth recording huge scores of quality fish.

Fishing within the parameters of Dublin Bay to Kish lighthouse to Lambay Island, the highlights of the day were the 69 thornback ray and the 67 smooth hounds, plus eight additional species, all caught and released. Phenomenal fishing by any standards!…

Fishing with illegal nets on River Feale – The Kerryman

A Listowel man has been found guilty of fishing with illegal, unlicensed nets in The River Feale for the second time in five years.
The Inland Fisheries Board brought the case against Colin Browne of 26 Curragh Close, Ballybunion Road, who was observed by officials fishing in The Feale with two nets on October 27 last year.

The court heard that Mr Browne has a previous conviction for the same offence in 2010, while another conviction dates back over 20 years.

Solicitor Anne Keane said her client knowns he was wrong and has ‘learned a hard lesson’ from his actions, adding that he is unable to offer any excuse….

Wrasse fighting like steam trains as the wanderer returns

Welcome back to Rookie Bass Angler Steven Neely who has returned to Ireland. With fish and weather like ours it’s hard to stay away !  Steve was out in Donegal and reports:

Steven Neely - KayakSo some of you will know that I am now back in Ireland after spending 6 months in the Channel Islands. I was dying to get back out over some of my old marks to see what was lurking as September always start to throw up the odd decent fish or two. However, I was very quickly reminded of the joyful weather on the West coast!

I think it was fair to say I experienced all four season in the space of three days! I had rain, blue skis, sunshine, a decent bit of heat and then cutting winds … but hey, that is Donegal for you!

Over the course of my few days away I spent a little bit on my old stomping ground targeting wrasse on my usual lure set ups and I must say despite not being massive they were in prime condition and fighting like steam trains!

Steven Neely - Wrasse Sept 2015 1After having some cracking wrasse sessions I decided it was time to roll the dice and go in pursuit of some new ground which was partly due to some detailed scrutiny of the OS maps and some useful info I had been given by a local friend.

My plan was to target some big pollack but despite the location and conditions looking perfect the fish simply didn’t want to play ball … we managed some smaller fish but not quite what we had been after. In saying that pollack always give a pretty good account of themselves especially when fishing over kelpy bottoms as they try to retreat to cover! Most of the fish took the 90 mm Illex Nitro Shad on a 20g jig head.

Steven Neely - Pollack Sept 2015The exploration proved successful – we found new access to parts of the coast, we nailed some fish and the potential looks good so I can’t wait to get back and see what else we can muster from the depths!

Unfortunately the wind and rain put to rest some of our others plans and we had to batten down the hatches for a day but as we watched the weather front pass we started to hatch another plan …. weather depending of course.

We woke up the next morning to find the wind had dropped right out and the sea had flattened off …. it was time for action. We dug out the tandem kayak and got ourselves kitted out for a session a float.

It wasn’t particularly pleasant as it was still a bit damp and drizzly but it was the best we could get.

We launched mid afternoon and paddled our way round to a sheltered bay where I had always wanted to try fishing the reefs for wrasse. Again, this was unknown to us but surely it was worth a go!?

Steven Neely - Fat Wrasse Sept 2015It was slow with only a few wrasse and some pollack but it proved a theory which I had for a long time if nothing else it was worth it just to nail this awesome coloured wrasse which had a cracking orange glow to the belly. It nailed a craw style lure in about 5 feet of water of some very heavy boulders!

Steven Neely - Donegal dolphinsTo top it all off we were paid a little visit by some dolphins which were making their way up the coast as we paddled back to the car. There is something about these creatures which simply puts a smile to your face … awesome!

So there you go – a rather brief blog post on some of the action over the last weekend or so but don’t worry there will be plenty more to come as I have some pretty cool trips lined up and loads of fishing adventures planned so stay tuned!

Tight Lines!

Steve

Heavy rain impacts on Moy but looking good for coming week as levels drop back

Ridge pool

Fisheries Information Manager Markus Müller reports from the Moy – w/e 13th September 2015

Fishing was mixed over the past week, with 130 salmon reported for the Moy system. While water levels continued to drop until the end of the week angling effort was still low. Heavy rain impacted on the upper reaches of the Moy over the weekend. However, it is hoped that fishing will improve in the coming days when water levels should have dropped again.

The only fish on the Moy Fishery was caught on the Ridge Pool by UK angler, Robert Rashley. Robert’s 5 lbs. salmon took a Cascade fished on an intermediate line. UK journalist, Nick Fisher, scored on the Mount Falcon water where he landed two fish: a nice seven pounder on spinner and a 5 lbs. salmon on prawn.

Regular visitor Rene Königs from Germany showed his class and ability to catch fish in difficult conditions on the Coolcronan Fishery where he had five salmon for the week, while Alan Culley, Northern Ireland, had a 6 lbs. fish on Gannon’s on the worm.

Further up-river on East Mayo, Larry Fewer from Cork and John McDonagh from Galway were amongst the few successful anglers. They had fish of 4 lbs. and 7 lbs. respectively, both on spinner.

High water on the Bandon and the Lee

Eileen Carroll Murphy IFI reports from the River Lee:

River Lee

No catches reported. Water high.

River Bandon

The river remained low at the start of the week with little angling taking place. Heavy rain arrived Thursday night and all day Friday resulting in the biggest flood of the year. Saturday the river was unfishable and on Sunday there was one fish caught and another lost. We then got another big flood but the forecast is for dry weather so prospects are good for the last two weeks of the season.

Plenty of small roach keep anglers busy in East Clare

Ken O’Neill IFI reports from the East Clare Lakes:

The East Clare Lakes angling is picking up a bit at the moment with Pike and Coarse angling.

Anglers have been catching plenty of smaller fish – mainly roach.

Lough Derg trout love to feed on the Reed Smuts

Ken O’Neill IFI reports from Lough Derg:

A black fly locally – reed smuts – are hatched and trout are feeding on them.  However there are relatively few anglers fishing them.  There have been trout anglers trolling and two anglers have been reported as catching two large ferox trout – which they released afterwards.  However, it is also locally known that there are plenty of trout in the lake for both fly and deep angling – however, there seems to be few anglers that realise that Trout do not give themselves up easily on this beautiful wild lake.

The mayfly fly angling on Derg, especially around the Mountshannon, is relatively easy angling and accordingly, there are hundreds of anglers fishing Derg during this narrow time window because of this.  However, the trout fishing is still good on Derg – just as good as any other wild lake, and, if an angler was interested in angling on Derg – the chances are you would have a good fly hatch of reed smut and a nice rise of early autumn trout.
