Returned Atlantic salmon tracking tags aid fishing research – Fish Site

GLOBAL – Researchers with the Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) have been able to locate two missing satellite pop-off tags used in salmon tracking research.

The tags were found on beaches in Greenland and Ireland, thousands of kilometres from where they were first released in New Brunswick on wild Atlantic salmon last year.

Each year, ASF researchers surgically attach pop-off tags to selected salmon allowing them to track their movement from the river to feeding grounds in the ocean….

Angry anglers tell of devastation as pollution kills 300 fish – Belfast Telegraph

Anglers have told of their anger and devastation after at least 300 fish were killed in a major pollution incident on the River Enler in Co Down.
The River Enler had just started to recover from a pollution incident that happened in 2013, when nearly 5,000 brown and sea trout were killed. Ian Kittle, a marine biologist from Comber, said: “The river was starting to recover and we had been busy restocking it.

“This incident is not as bad. But at the same time, we have lost juvenile fish and more.

“Our resident brown trout are dead and we also found a large sea trout that had been coming up from the lough to spawn,”…

Postcards Revisited: A return to the colourful fishing village of Baltimore – Irish Times

The last in a series in which we return to the scene of John Hinde postcards: the oldest building in this vintage postcard of the west Cork village has survived, but the red boat met a nastier fate and locals are in conflict about the identities of the couple.

There is a rumour that John Hinde photographers were issued with pots of fuschia bushes and rhododendrons that they drove around Ireland with in the boots of their cars. The reason for the botanical luggage was that, if needed, they could be strategically placed in postcard shots for a blast of colour, because in John Hinde postcards, the more colour the better.

The Hinde postcard “The Fishing Village of Baltimore, West Cork” is dominated by the red sail on the yellow dinghy at the water’s edge…

Irish Angling Update 30/07/15

Unseasonable weather continued this week, with some heavy downpours mingling among the sultry days and the cool evenings. With the rain came the fish and this week we saw anglers from Ballisodare down to Waterville enjoy some good catches. Sea anglers chose their days wisely too and were pleased with their outcome, while coarse and pike anglers found the midlands to their favour.

Delphi continued to be steady during the week with 20 fish landed. Veteran angler John Mills has been fishing there since the early ‘6os and this week recorded his 200th fish. The Old Maestro himself saw many changes over the years and delights in a challenge. John was in good company this week with Peter Eaton landing a magnificent fish for this time of year weighing 10lbs 14ozs at the Whin pool on a Willie Gunn.

Owenea Fishery saw very heavy rain on Sunday which left it unfishable, but from Tuesday on most beats had good catches of grilse up to the 5lb mark. Beat 5 saw a 10 lb salmon while beat 8 recorded a 12½lb on the fly for Davy Arbuckle. Gerald Higgins made the most of his day on Lough Melvin with 15lb fish.

The Drowes had nice water levels all week and some good grilse plus 40 salmon were caught. Water levels on the Erriff fishery were also good and 32 salmon were recorded. Costello and Fermoyle surprised anglers who had been complaining about the low numbers of sea trout. This week saw a dramatic change with 44 caught in a few days. Green Peter and a yellow canary mayfly pattern worked best at Glencar and here again the sea trout were up to 3½lbs in weight.

It was all rock ‘n’ roll down in Kerry when 12 year old Elvis Gingham, from Brussels, caught his first ever Salmon. Vincent Appleby reports some fine sea trout including a 5½ lbs fish caught on the fly and released by Steve Cloke. With bright sunshine, most anglers preferred trolling. US Angler Mr. Bill Dooner managed a cracking 12lb salmon. Butler’s Pool at Waterville Golf Links have reported a number of good fish lately, this week was the turn of guest Richard Corrigan using a Silver Stoat Fly. The River Laune had a 15 lbs landed from Johnston’s on the fly, but fish are scarce enough.

Down Cork way the river Ilen had 20 salmon, the Coomhola and Ouvane had 10. The biggest of these were 10lbs. The Lee had 8 grilse from 2lbs to 6lbs landed on fly and shrimp, but it was the Bandon who surpassed it’s sisters with 16½lb and an 11lb fish. The Munster Blackwater is fining off nicely and the lower river should fish well. Ellis beat had a fine 11lb fish and some excellent grilse up to 5lb were released at the Glenmore beat.

The Boyne saw Jason Hughes of Rossin, Slane and District Angling catch and release an 8lb feisty salmon on Wednesday who put up a good battle. A record week was had over at the Moy. The yearly total so far stands at 4,735 fish. Water levels were high this week but 15 year old Cian O’Bourke didn’t let that bother him as he caught his first salmon. A great way to spend his Birthday, well done Cian!

Twilight beckoned the anglers on Lough Sheelin with the most prolific surface hatches tempting the trout. Heaviest fish this week was 7 lbs caught by Gareth Llywelyn from Wales. Ken Whelan also had a 7lber, this time a rainbow on Lough Lene taken on a perch fry imitation and lady angler Ann Ayres had a 4lbs 5oz ‘bow caught on a 9cm Savage Gear Lowrider lure. In Waterford’s Knockaderry, young at heart David Tantrum interrupted his catches of rainbows to draw in a super brownie. David tells us the reservoir is full of monsters waiting for a good battle!

Peter fishing on Lough Arrow is still in full swing and both sedges and mayflies are bringing trout to the surface on Lough Corrib. A charity competition on the Corrib and Lough Mask had forty-three rods catch 22 trout with a weight of 37.75 lbs. Hosted by former Irish Ladies International, Dorrie Gibbons, all proceeds went towards a sensory garden for children with special needs who attend Cong NS. Basil Shields. Well done to all involved.

Deep water drifts in Lough Melvin saw some good bags of Sonaghan fishing. HF McCloy fished there on Monday and reports a lovely brown trout. Dropping night time temperatures made the angling at Lough Ennell a hit and miss affair. The Lough Ennell Perpetual Cup will be fished August 30th.

Lough Conn reports that trout are rising freely and are readily taking wet and dry mayfly and olive patterns. Local guide Paul Caslin had 21 trout over 4 days, mainly to small dabbler patterns at Massbrook, Coleman Shallows and Glass Island.

Young anglers at Melview Lodge literally made a splash, with one young Belgium angler landing in the water with his camera ! Nonethless young Sen had a cracking pike at 104cms. Later in the week a 15 year old from France called Jean – Baptiste landed his first Irish pike and two cracking Perch to boot. Great to see such enthusiastic young anglers.

Jamie Donoghue with his Ree cracker on the fly
Jamie Donoghue with his Ree cracker on the fly is our ‘Catchof the Week’ winner

Catch of the Week’ today goes to another young pike angler. Jamie Donoghue was out fishing with his uncle Jimmy Murray on Lough Ree. With pike flies tied by his uncle, Jamie hooked into a real cracker pushing the 20lbs mark. After an epic battle he eventually boated the pike.

NCFFI’s All Ireland Senior Mens and Ladies Championship this year attracted 110 anglers to Killeshandra. Local angler Fergal Smith was crowned the male champion with his 11kg catch and Mary Tigwell took the title of Ladie’s Champion with 6.300kg. A super event and well run. The Junior version of this event is on Saturday 29th August.

A very wet and miserable Lough Sillan in Shercock had the Drogheda Coarse Angling Clubs 5th round match last Sunday. Overall winner was Jim Reilly with 8.690kg. Cavan areas saw some lovely bream and tench bags. Five English anglers fishing the Arva/Gowna area reported good bags up to 40/50lb. Johnny Hagley from Carrigallen fished Trinity Island on Friday on the pole with red maggots and had 2 tench both over 5 lb along with many hybrids all around the 1  lb mark.

Killala bay was basking in rays, seven varieties to be precise. Donal Kennedy, skipper of the Leah had two great days fishing last weekend. The anglers had undulated, painted, homelyn, blonde, cuckoo and small eyed ray! It was enough to make you reach for your sunglasses ! They also caught and released two specimen thornback ray weighing 23 lbs. and 20 lbs.

The shoals of mackerel bursting out of the sea drew the predators on the Wicklow coast. Skipper Kit Dunne reported tope, huss and loads of hounds. Way down in Cork, guide Richie Ryan had a 17 year old Slovakian tackling the language and the fish. Marek had some fine pollack and a fabulous kelpy 6 lb cod. Around on the Clare coast charterboat Lady Gwen II had catches of cod, pollack and mackerel and fellow charterboat skipper Luke Aston had double figure bullhuss, a 42lb Tope and a lovely Ballan which was 2.09kg just under specimen size.

Sligo also saw loads of mackerel and good fishing and neighbour Galway likewise. 11 species were caught at the recent Buccaneers SAC Master Boat Angler competition. Steve Turner won leg 4 and thanks went to Skipper Kevin MacGabhann for looking after all the crew so well.

In other news, we saw the great work carried out in July by the Dublin Angling Initiative with many new anglers introduced to the sport of coarse, sea and game angling at different locations throughout Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow. Throughout the reports this week, it’s great to see so many youth getting involved and what better way to spend a week end than pass on this love of fishing to the next generation.

As the August Bank Holiday approaches all anglers are reminded to put safety first and have a great weekend.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Nancy Hearne
