Elvis is alive and well and catching his first salmon on the Currane

Ghillie Vincent Appleby reports on the salmon and sea trout fishing in the past week on Lough Currane from his blog at http://wwwsalmonandseatroutphotos.blogspot.com/

23/07/15 Mr. Anthony Buckley of Cork ended his 59th  year in style with two fine Salmon / Grilse on the troll, weighing in at 3 lbs. and 4 lbs. and his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com reported that they caught and released a Sea Trout in the 2 lbs. class, also caught on the troll, plus they lost a fine Grilse, but at least Anthony finished his 59th in style and many Happy Returns for tomorrow. In the fly department, US Angler, Mr. Dooner caught a fine 3 lbs. Sea Trout, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com    For the rest of the angling community, No Comment, but to be fair the wind was light to calm NW all day with bright sunshine with the odd bit of cloud cover at times.

24/07/15 The Wind was from the NE so very few anglers didn’t catch themselves a feast, but Mr. Steve Cloke would beg to differ and for good reason, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. John Murphy, caught a fine 5 ½ lbs. Sea Trout on the fly, which he sportingly put back, which is great to see. Wind as already stated with reasonable cloud cover with the odd shower. Yesterday evening, local angler Mr. Jim Sayers, caught a fine 2 lbs Sea Trout on the drift.

25/07/15 The conditions first thing this morning were only fit for trolling with bright sunshine and there was not enough wind to blow out a candle, so you don’t have be a rocket scientist that trolling was the only way forward and one Lady Angler took full advantage of theses conditions and that was Ms Lesley Bishop from Shank Hill Dublin and fishing out of www.butlerarms.com caught a fine 7 lbs. 1 ozs Salmon on the troll, while fishing with her Gillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan of www.vincentsfishing.com and just for the record that was Lesley’s first salmon and may it be the first of many. Now to the Sea Trout department. Mr. John Magee from Northern Ireland, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a fine 4 lbs. Sea Trout on the fly and for the rest of the fly fishing community there was little to no action, but to be fair it wasn’t exactly warm out there even though there was good cloud cover all afternoon with light rain around 4pm with a good breeze from the South.

26/07/15  US Angler, Mr. Bill Dooner was in great form, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly  of www.lakelandshouse.com caught a cracker of a Salmon on the troll in the 12 lbs. class. Now to the fly department, UK angler Mr. James Henchey, caught 5 ½ lbs Salmon, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan of www.vincentsfishing.com Now to the Sea Trout department Mr. Neil Shiers caught 1 Sea Trout on the drift, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com and for the rest of the Sea Trout Anglers their was no comment, ether they caught nothing or their hands were to cold to let their fingers do the talking at the end of their day. Wind West and overcast and did not feel that warm.

27/07/15 Breaking News, Vincent Appleby causes controversy over photographs or the lack of them I should say. The reason for this on Saturday 25th there was a fine Salmon caught by Ms Lesley Bishop, while fishing with her Gillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan of www.vincentsfishing.com  and Her Gillie wasn’t amused because I didn’t put the picture of all of them up on the Blog, my apology for this but the reason I didn’t was because Lesley wasn’t holding the fish that she caught, so lets put the record straight and seeing is believing, I believe it caused a heated discussion in the back of the Lobster Bar, but this only speculation on my part ? Now for today’s facts. Lough Currane was on the wild side with a strong NW blowing but this didn’t deter a few boats going out and all the head lines go to UK angler Mr. Ken Towner, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan of www.vincentsfishing.com caught a fine 4 ½ lbs. Grilse and lost one as well and finished their day off with a Sea Trout in the 2 lbs. class. Weather as already stated.

Elvis the star of Lough Currane

28/07/15 Another cold blustery day on Lough Currane, but with all that, Elvis was the Star of the day and for good reason, 12 year old, Master. Elvis Gingham, from Brussels, caught his first ever Salmon on the troll while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com and may it be the first of many. In the Sea Trout C&R department Mr. Andrew Brown, caught 2 Juniors on the drift, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Bob Priestley. Now to the backdate department, over the weekend, UK angler, Mr. James Henchey, caught and released a fine Grilse on the Famous Butler Pool and at www.watervillegolflinks.ie while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] and James also very kindly sent me the photo of his Salmon that he caught on the lake, fishing with his Gillie Mr. Vincent O’Sullivan of www.vincentsfishing.com  Wind NW fresh and gusty with showers.

29/07/15 We start at the famous Butler Pool and at www.watervillegolflinks.ie and in the words of Waterville House. Mr. Richard Corrigan enjoying fishing at the Butler’s Pool, caught a 5 lb Salmon, on a Silver Stoat Fly and ably assisted by his Gillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] Now we head upstream to Lough Currane and the Salmon department. Mr. Nick Scot of Rome, Italy, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught a fine 5 lbs. 11 ozs Salmon / Grilse on a Red Ass Green Peter using a sinking line, Nick was telling me that there was a good wave at the time he struck his Salmon and had one hell of a good fight. Just for the record Nick was dabbling the two droppers when his fish took the point fly. Staying with Mr. Nick Scot and party, yesterday they were fishing the upper lakes of Lough Derriana and they caught a good few Brown Trout and finished their day off with a Sea Trout  of 2 ½ lbs. all on the fly. Wind was light variable with the odd shower.  Just for the record today’s pictures from the Butler’s Pool are courtesy of Waterville House and at www.watervillegolflinks.ie

The beauty at Oldbridge on the River Boyne

It was on Wednesday 29th July on the river Boyne when he decided to try his luck for the last few hours before sunset.
Jason tells us “I was just about to pack it up, when I hooked into this lovely 8lb Salmon.
The fish gave a great account of itself making several great runs before being landed. Fish returned fit and well !!!”

Well done Jason !

Still good fishing on Lough Conn

Paul Caslin with a beautifully marked trout from the Coleman Shallows

Declan Cook reports from Lough Conn:

There are less anglers venturing out onto Lough Conn these days but the quality of angling available to them has not diminished since the end of the Mayfly. Reports from around the lake have revealed that trout are still rising freely and are readily taking wet and dry mayfly and olive patterns. Talk of the “dog days” abound on some of the neighbouring trout Loughs but Conn is still producing great angling. Weather conditions have been somewhat mixed with plenty of rain and wind interspersed with the occasional warm balmy evening, all of which has proved conducive to lively trout angling both during the day and through to late evening.

In Cloghans Bay, Cork angler Pat Collins enjoyed good angling to dry olives and sedges with 14 good trout over three days sometimes in near calm conditions. Ian wise & John Warren from Crossmolina continue to enjoy good fishing in Bog Bay and Jurogue, with several fish to 2lbs on sedge patterns. Several parties fished out of Cloonamoyne Fishery over the past few weeks with David and Tony Jackson from Gloucester fishing for six days and returning 54 Trout, all on dry Mayfly patterns. Tony McGrattan and father Eugene from Dublin returned 22 trout, all on wet fly, mainly Mayfly and sedge patterns, best fish 1.75 lbs. Willie Scully and David Penny from Palmerstown fished for six days and returned 64 Trout, mostly on dry Mayfly. Brothers John and Gerry O’Donnell from Donegal fished in Bog Bay and returned 24 Trout to one pound, on various wetfly patterns. Ian Wise fished with John Tobin from Cheam off the Juroge for 7 fish, best was a Sea Trout of two pounds to Ian with a Brown Trout of 1.5lbs to John all on the Red Wulff. Bevan Craig and son Ewan from Cork fished for two days in Ned’s andFlannery’s Bays and returned 23 Trout with the best weighing 2lbs. Most fish were caught on both wet and dry patterns mainly Wulffs, Cock Robin and Sooty Olive. Cannon John Flynn and family from Kilkenny fished for five days for 31 trout all caught on dry Olives; best fish, 1.75lbs. Ian Wise also fished with Barry Seagrave from Kells and boated eight trout to 1.5lbs all on dry patterns. The most productive areas for those fishing out of Cloonamoyne at the moment seem to be Flannery’s Bay to the Abbey Point, Woodford Shallows and the Jurogue.

On South Conn, local guide, Paul Caslin, has had som great fishing at Massbrook, Coleman Shallows and Glass Island wit 21 trout over 4 days, mainly to small dabbler patterns.

Larry Mulligan Cup fished on Lough Lene amid the downpour

Mulligan Cup on Lene.
Tom Fagan presents Aidan Heffernan with Larry Mulligan Cup on Lene.

Angling Guide and journalist Mick Flanagan reports:

Our good pal Brian Conlon of Wild Total Outdoors on friars Mill Road had a cracking day on Lene last week. Brian was joined by his Fiancé Ann Ayres.  Ann was in the thick of the action on Lene. Their best rainbow rattled the scales at 4lbs 5oz and was caught on a 9cm Savage Gear Lowrider lure. Another angler having a ball with the Lene Rainbows was Dr Ken Whelan who has put pen to paper over the years on angling here in Ireland. This includes the famous The Angler In Ireland, which covers game, coarse and sea angling. This can all be checked on http://www.kenwhelan.info/blog .Ken had some super rainbow trout pushing 7lbs in weight on perch-fry, and it makes very interesting reading on his blog. If you are planning a trip to Lene this August Bank Holiday weekend, drop into Brian in Wild Total Outdoors and he will have all the Perch Fry lures, and hard bait lures you need to catch your prized fish. Brian can be contacted on 044-93-01133.

LARRY MULLIGAN CUP ON LENE.

The Larry Mulligan Cup was fished on Lough Lene last Sunday July 26th and it proved a huge success with some cracking trout coming on line. If you remember back to last Sunday we had some savage rain, but it did not deter the Lene members from supporting this popular fly-fishing competition. Aidan Heffernan produced a super fish of 2.74kg to take top rod, in second place was Gerry Heaslip 2.18lbs, 3rd John Brennan 2.10kgs, 4th Niall Oakes2.00kg, and 5th Donal Rafferty 1.92kgs. Presentation took place at Fagan Point and Lene Chairman thanked all who fished and presented Aidan with the Larry Mulligan Cup pictured this week in Angling Focus. Next competition on Lene is the Michael Healy Cup, and its and evening fly-fishing competition. Fishing 7pm-11pm.More on this next week.

Angling Guide and journalist Mick Flanagan reports:

The night time fishing is hit and miss these night as the temperature can drop quite fast, and some nights there are little or no Sedge hatches. Saying this the Ennell anglers were out in force last Friday night for the Jimmy Nea Cup, and you needed a trout over 3lbs to get into the winning enclosure. Top Rod was John Brennan with a super trout of 3.780lbs, Tom McEvoy finished 2nd with 3.742lbs, and Philip Smith was 3rd with another cracking Ennell trout weighing 3.542.Over 40 anglers competed on the night, and John Tyrrell Competition captain thanked all who supported the competition. Brendan Murray presented the prizes, and announced the next trout competition on Ennell will be the Lough Ennell Perpetual Cup sponsored by Con Hope. This will take place on Sunday August 30th and will be fished from 11am-7pm.More on this in the coming weeks.

NCFFI’s All Ireland Senior Mens and Ladies Championship this year attracted 110 anglers

All Ireland Winners
All Ireland Winners

The town of Killeshandra in the heart of the Cavan lakelands once again hosted Ireland’s biggest and longest running one-day coarse angling event. The NCFFI’s All Ireland Senior Mens and Ladies Championship this year attracted 110 anglers from across Ireland and the UK to take part.

Local venues fished included Lough Oughter at Killykeen Forest Park and Sandy Point, Lower Derries, Rockfield, Glasshouse and Town Lake. The weather wasn’t kind and the fishing was expected to be tough but this didn’t deter too many.

NCFFI - All Ireland Championship 2015Defending champion, John Potters, drew the centre of Rockfield and not the hot section of Killykeen that most were looking to draw. Killykeen saw Team Ireland international, Nick Howell, win the title back in 2012 and drawing here was another previous winner Philip Jackson along with notable anglers such as Wayne Fuller and Andy Chapman. However, it was to be the venue to find the All Ireland Champion of 2015 and local angler Fergal Smith with his 11kg catch.

All Ireland Winners
All Ireland Winners

All eyes were on Cathal Hughes who has previously published his desire to win the title but it wasn’t to be. His catch from Town Lake was just 200g short of the championship. Visiting angler Brian Nesbitt from Eastbourne had a good start to his 10 day angling holiday with a 4th place at the Bob Parker Memorial match the day previous and now third place in the All Ireland. Lee Symonds, Baz Smith and Piotr Horbinski rounded off the top six on the match with a total payout of €2750, which included payouts for every five peg section.

Mary Tigwell Ladies Champion

This year saw 6 lady anglers take part with defending ladies champion Mary Tigwell and 2012 champion Emma McMahon fighting out with Kath Huthwaite, Sheila Bromley, junior Roisin Finchett and Baete Kiehek.

Keen junior international anglers James Gargan and James O’Doherty had a good day on Lower Derries and the youngest angler of the match Eoin Rogers fished Killykeen. We hope to see them back to compete in the Junior version of this event on Saturday 29th August.

The NCFFI would like to thank Inland Fisheries for their assistance with the pegging of the venues, carrying out bio-security measures and for stewarding the event. For Peter & Cathy of Irish Bait & Tackle Ltd in braving the weather to ensure the competing anglers had the convenience of on-site fresh bait and to Gilsenan’s Bar for their hospitality.

During the registration Jack Tisdall Junior Team Ireland Manager presented Philip Jackson, Lurgan Coarse Anglers with the new NCFFI Junior Club Champions cup for his team’s win on the Newry Canal back in May. He was also delighted to receive from Robert Buick, East Belfast Coarse Anglers a cheque for €420 raised by the club to support the U18 and U23 teams attendance at the World Youth Angling Championships in Serbia 8th & 9th August.

A great love of fishing brought Brian Bird to Ireland, may he RIP

It was with a sad heart that Kevin, Jane, Rebecca Lyons from Melview Lodge report:

I returned from holiday to hear the very sad news that Brian Bird had passed away while on a trip to Ireland, Brian and lifelong friend John highland were regular visitors to Melview Fishing Lodge where they both just liked to pass the time fishing in nice quiet places. Brian and John are both from the UK originally and now John lives in Wexford and Brian loved to visit John as much as possible.   John has been living in Wexford in Ireland for a number of years now and Brian used to come over and John would take him out on his boat sea fishing for a few days and then they would come up to Melview Fishing Lodge for a spot of course fishing for 5 or 6 days.

The late Brian Bird with a nice catch of Bream and Tench.

For Brian and John it was not about catching lots of fish but seeing nature as it should be, he was known for his one liners and cracking the odd joke which I know a lot of people will miss, none so more than me. Myself and family send our sincere condolences to all of Brian’s family, R.I.P.
