Mixed fishing reports for boat and shore in Kerry

Siegy Graber, skipper of Sioux out of Valentia Island, reports on the charter boat fishing out of Caherciveen…

We had a mixed week for our group from Germany. They caught 293 pollack, 2 cod, 18 coalfish, 4 ling, 10 pouting, 1 grey gurnard, 1 cuckoo wrasse, 2 poor cod, mackerels and sandeels.

Meanwhile anglers from the shore, fishing with John Quinlan of Thatch Cottage Ireland in Caherciveen, have had some action on lures. At the weekend it was grey skies yet again but there were some nice pollack and bass for Simon Lewis.

Meanwhile Tomasz Ekert reports in his blog Sea Bass Hunting the bass fishing in Kerry has been fairly slow. He is still getting some fish for the tagging programme – tag number 1006 goes on a decent fish which fell for a surface lure.

Sioux

Siegy Grabher, born in Austria near the Lake of Constance, started fishing as a young boy and spent several fishing holidays in Ireland as a young adult. In 1998 he relocated to Ireland and started with deep sea angling. The charter boat “Sioux” is an Offshore 105 equipped with a 300 hp Ford Sabre Turbo Diesel engine. The season for most species is from April to the end of September; cod, pollock, ling, coalfish, whiting, haddock, mackerel, garfish, pouting, plaice, ballan wrasse, cuckoo wrasse, grey and red gurnard, seabass, mullet, skate, ray-thornback, conger eel, dogfish, bullhuss and blueshark (July – September)

Good sea trout fishing on the Slaney

The Slaney River Trust reports that the salmon fishing has been slow since May but that the sea trout fishing is currently pretty good…

Salmon fishing along the river since the last report on the 22nd May has been slow. The river has been low during most of this period though so this is not surprising. Any rise in water has brought some salmon in and fish have been caught.

After a very slow start to the sea trout fishing anglers were very concerned about another poor season but thankfully the run picked up considerably towards the end of June and fishing is currently pretty good. Anglers have reported good bags of fish with trout averaging between 3/4 – 1 lb with some hitting the 2 1/2 lb mark.

Please remember there is a bag limit of 3 sea trout per day.

The best time to fish is between 9.30 and midnight with silver flies doing best. Patterns to try include the Kill Devil Spider, Teal Blue and Silver, Alexandra and the Butcher but these fresh run fish aren’t overly fussy.

The village of Baile Bhúirne (Ballyvourney) in west Cork will come alive this week with the hosting of the Five Nations Fly Fishing Championship by the Trout Anglers’ Federation of Ireland (Tafi). Steady fishing at Delphi, 19 salmon last week

Catch and Release — Mark corps releases an 11lb salmon on July 4th

David McEvoy from the Delphi Fishery reports that the fishing has been steady since with good numbers of salmon entering the system and nineteen fish landed. Water conditions have been excellent throughout with the river now running at 65…

10 July: Last Sunday, 03 July, was a beautiful day, not ideal for salmon fishing. As a result we only landed one fish. Jono Phealan from Laois had a lovely fish of approx. 7lbs in the Whin Pool on a Shrimp fly.

There were three on Monday, with Pat O’Connor having two, one of approx. 4lbs from the Whin pool on a Foxford shrimp and one from the Horseshoe of approx. 7lbs also on a Foxford shrimp. Werner Fasching also has a fish from the Whin pool of 5lbs12ozs on a Cascade. There was heavy rain on Tuesday
but we still managed to land three. John Faith had a fish of 5lbs9ozs from the Whin pool on an Apache Shrimp. David Dunne had one off Finlough of 4lbs9ozs on a Yellow Shrimp and Heribert had a fish of approx. 4lbs in the Kings pool on a Collie Dog.

There were five landed on the 8th. Werner Fasching had his second, a fine fish of 8lbs14ozs from the Stream on Finlough on a Flamethrower. Conor Hannon had the smallest fish of the year so far from the Grilse pool on a Cascade, weighing in at 1lbs12ozs (not the smallest on record, I think I hold that honour). John Faith had a cracking grilse of 7lbs7ozs also from the Grilse pool on an Apache shrimp. His fishing partner Ron Fry managed to land his first ever salmon, a good fish of 6lbs3ozs from Heneghans on a Foxford shrimp. Heribert had the fifth of the day, a fish of 2lbs14ozs from the Rock pool on a Willie Gunn.

We only had two yesterday, 9th July, both landed by Australian Tim Robertson, including his first ever, a nice fish of 4lbs14ozs on a Willie Gunn needle tube from the Rock pool. His second was also on the Willie Gunn from the Meadow pool weighing in at 4lbs. There were also nine fish lost on the river that morning, some by very experienced anglers it must be said!!

There were five landed today, Friday 10th July. Heribert had our once in a decade fish from Duffers run, weighing in at 6lbs1oz on a Willie Gunn. Mark Walton from Sligo landed three, one from the New Island pool of 4lbs7ozs on a Cascade and two off Finlough on a Green Peter, one of 3lbs and the other of approx. 7lbs. Finally Alois Pfeiffer had a nice grilse from the Turn pool of 4lbs4ozs on a Cascade.

With broken weather forecast over the next few days it bodes well for our new arrivals tomorrow, so we’ll just have to wait and see how it transpires.

Angler catches two 900lb sixgill sharks off Clare coast

Luke Aston reports from Carrigaholt where the fishing has picked up. Oh, and by the way one of his anglers had 2 Six gill sharks of about 900lb each!

08 July: First day this season with plenty of Mackerel about. Got them at Horse Island and they were solid just north of Loop Head close in.

09 July: Very good days Toping today in the estuary. All males up to 38lb. Also had some lovely guests out for a couple of hours this morning

10 July: Out trying for six gill sharks today and one rod hooked a small skate – but something else took an interest in it also!

It wasn’t too long until one of the angler onboard hooked into a genuine monster from the deep. David Ball was the lucky man and he managed to bring the sixgill shark safely to the boat. The huge fish was about 3.5m and estimated to weigh 900lb! It is great to see them still around. This is now the 7th year we have got them.

The 100lb skate that was also landed on the day didn’t seem so big after we got a good look at the six gill!

11 July: How many fisherman in Europe have caught a SixGill? How many have caught two? As if catching a fish of a lifetime was not enough for David Ball he went out and did it all again today. Once again he had a six gill of about 900lb . A short video of the catch is available on the Facebook page.

Trev Platt wins Inniscarra 2 Day Open with 38.900kg

Results from the open matches on Inniscarra this weekend where Saturday’s dull and miserable weather conditions saw some good bags made up on Day 1. Trev Platt led the field with 23.900kg with Paul McCaul not far behind on 19.550kg well ahead of third placed Kevin Leahy on 13.700kg.

The bags were a bit smaller on Day 2 and the margin even smaller as Conor Browne took first place with 17.350kg closely followed by Paul McCaul on 17.300kg. Trev Platt’s 15kg was enough for third place on the day and gave him overall victory.

Great fishing again this evening in the final leg of the Oaklands Junior League. The standard is getting better every year. The fishing this weekend proved that these juniors, who employed the best best tactics to make the most of the conditions on the day, are as good as any senior anglers .

Fishing tough but 44.730kg needed to win Ballybay Festival

Ballybay Angling Association’s Annual 2 Day Festival is always a well run event which is thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. The competition, which this year had a prize fund exceeding €4000, saw 67 anglers fish County Monaghan venues including Drumlona, Bairds Shore, Bream Rock and Lough Egish this weekend. The Dromore system favourites produced mixed bags of roach, perch, tench and some bream. Although fishing was difficult some nice bags of fish were caught over the weekend, with a few tench and bream showing up, as well as some good quality roach.

At the end of Day 1 Nicky Seddon was coming out on top with 27.625kgs. Tony Burke was in placed Second with 25.200kgs and Kevin Johnston was in third place on 22.150kgs.

Day 2 saw more tough fishing but some of the other anglers rallied and Johnny Keith made his intentions clear as he amassed a very creditable total weight of 44.730kg to win the competition.

Birthday boy Ollie does well at Blessington

Naas and District Anglers fished a knock up at Blessington on Saturday. After meeting for breakfast at Kenny’s Cafe the draw was held at 9.30. Wind and rain made life tough for anglers on the early pegs but the higher numbers pegs enjoyed shelter from the wind. In the end just 10lb 3oz was needed for the win and third place was secured with a modest 3lb catch as the Blessington fish, as ever, play hard to catch.

Ollie Doyle on his birthday was top rod with 10lb 3oz.
A very popular second place went to junior member Aussie Conway with 7lb.
NADA PRO Paul McLoughlin took 3rd place with only 7 fish for 3lb.
