Daingean Match Anglers - Coarse event

Roach shoals have turned up at Lanesborough, hopes things will improve

Paul Waghorne tells us that the hot, sunny weather saw catches slow down for a time with many anglers adopting a more sedate, feeder fishing approach to their sport when things got particularly tough. For those who could not get enough of the small fish fishing the whip did well around the gusher. But it was not until Wednesday afternoon that anglers had something to get excited about. Paul picks up the story…

Jed, James and Michael from Drogheda, had some good fish up to just under a pound, along with a few Rudd of similar size. The odd Pike was caught, but not over 5lbs.

The temperature zoomed up to 10.3c in the last hours before dusk and there is no doubt that tomorrow will see the best silver fish returns of the spring so far. I’m quietly confident of some larger Pike following the shoals from the lake. It’s also worth noting that the barometer is dropping, and this combined with a light southerly wind will aid fish into feeding.

My evening session didn’t start until 19:45 when I decided to ambush the Roach coming through the bridge, well that was the plan anyway. Ambush may seem the wrong choice of words as they obviously swam straight passed me up to the Drogheda lads who continued to catch good quality fish. I did manage 9 with the best going 6oz before the fading light called time.

James O'Doherty
James O'Doherty

Irish International and Erne Anglers club member James O’Doherty, Tubertini UK and only 16yrs of age took his first festival win on his home waters at the DAIWA Erne Easter Three Day Festival at the weekend. The Three day festival run by Erne Anglers and Fishing Tackle & Bait was fished on the town venues of Derrycharra and Cornagrade on the River Erne in Enniskillen. The weather was nice but the good flow on the river was cold flood waters making the fishing difficult at times.

It was a closely played match with James scraping into the top position on the final day beating John Potters, a notable angler and current holder of the NCFFI All Ireland and Waterways Classic titles for 2015 by just 20g. Ryan Kersley’s lovely Erne bream catch put him into the top sixth just behind his father Tony Kersley.

Angling Report 7th April (Email to Laune Angling Report)

Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association Waters and Beat 3.

As of Tuesday 7th April Laune now down to a beautiful 2 feet 6 inches on the gauge at Johnston’s.  Despite the lovely weather and the lovely water over the weekend angling effort was low.  In these lovely conditions I would expect to be hearing of catches of sea trout or even salmon soon.

But no news of fish from Laune Anglers waters over the last week.

Prospects: I think I said this time last year that 2014 would have to be better than 2013 it the same this time, surely 2015 can’t be as bad as 2014.

Permits for Laune Anglers waters from now to the end of July only €25 per day.

Beat 3:           Perfect water on Beat 3 but angling effort low to non-existent.

Dave Walsh with the first caught on fly this year

Dave Walsh from Mallow landed our first salmon on fly on April 3rd. It was taken on a cone-head Cascade on a super fast sink tip at the Barrels on Bridgetown Priory. It’s our 11th. springer so far this season.
Even better was the fact that it was his first ever springer.

Conditions

The whole river is dropping slowly but steadily and clarity throughout is good 4 feet this morning.

The Killavullen gauge is working again & it is at 1.42m at 10.00 – perfect fly height for the upper river.

The lower river at Ballyduff is dropping steadily but very slowly. It is down to 0.54m at 09.30 this morning. Perfect fly height here too. Clarity 4 feet.

Water temperature at    Ballyduff: 9.0ºC / 48.2ºF @ 10.00 today.
Water temperature at Killavullen:  10.8 – 9.3ºC / 51.4 – 46.6F @ 10.00.

Prospects

Superb right through the coming week with no rain due and the river fining down. The upper & lower river were both well fly fishable today.
