Hedges & Trees provide only comfort for Leinster coarse anglers

The Leinster Coarse Fishing Federation fished the 8th leg of their Leinster Open at the Millennium Bridge section of the canal at Daingan last weekend. Unfortunately, a bitter north wind made fishing extremely tough, and the only consolation was that the wind was at their backs, with a hedgeline providing some level of shelter from the biting gusts.

All in all, it wasn’t a day to remember, with a few small roach featuring and an odd small tench popping up. Ah well, there’s always next time…

Ireland on the Fly – Empowering communities to be custodians of their local rivers

Education about and local engagement with rivers and water catchments are vital for empowering communities, kids and parents to be custodians of their local environments and one group that has been doing fantastic work in this area since the 1990s has been Streamscapes.

It came about after Paul Kearney and Mark Boyden set up the Coomhola Salmon Trust in West Cork in 1989 and evolved then into Streamscapes, working with local communities and schools in the area of aquatic and biodiversity education.

Mark joins Tom & Daire on this week’s episode to tell them more about the work that they do, the importance of empowering local communities and how it can help with the next generation in realising the importance of their environment and river catchments near them.

IASCaire Feeder Club reports on the second match of their Spring League fished at Lough Gowna…

Spring League – Match 2 Recap!

The second match of the Spring League took place on Lough Gowna, Tesas Shore, and let’s just say… the weather wasn’t exactly on our side! Strong winds and gusts made fishing tougher than expected, with only a handful of fish being caught. But despite the challenging conditions, a few of the lads still managed to land some decent fish and climb the leaderboard!

It was a close battle right to the very end, but here are your TOP 3 ANGLERS:

  • 1st Place: Martin Edwards – 2.930kg
  • 2nd Place: Pavel Tkachenko – 2.830kg
  • 3rd Place: Marcin Stolarz – 2.740kg

Big shoutout to Enaghan Self Catering for allowing us to use their fantastic premises! It’s a top-class spot, and if you’re looking for a great fishing getaway, we highly recommend booking in – the place can produce some serious weights in the summer!

Well done to everyone who took part! On to the next one!

26 March: Bigger fish this time. 4 Mullet from four takes, I was much more in tune , great craic.

Skate being prepared for release

Mark Gannon reports on the charterboat fishing Courtmacsherry…

With the weather improving we put a charter together with anglers interested in gilling for pollack, cod and coalfish and then anchoring up to try for Common Skate.

We had some good sized pollack with JJ Kelly landing the biggest, and his brother Paw had plenty of medium sized coalies on feathers and lures.

At anchor we caught a few dogfish and within the hour Craig Kelly landed a Common Skate, total length 193 cm approximately weighing 160 lbs, an Irish Specimen the first one of 2025 tagged and released.

We fished till 5pm but only had several more dogfish. Great to get the season off to a positive start.

Today, we hosted an incredible Youth Fly Fishing Training Day, where eight young anglers had the chance to learn the art of casting and practice their skills on the river. Experienced instructors guided participants through hands-on practice, helping them develop essential techniques and an appreciation for the sport.

The event was filled with excitement, learning, and a shared love for the outdoors.

A big thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the day a success—we can’t wait to see these young anglers back on the water!

Good start to charter season in west Clare

Skipper Sean Maguire has his boat, the Isle of Aran, back in the water and fishing again for the new season.

A first trip out at the weekend saw perfect weather conditions, although an easterly wind and ebb tide didn’t help the fishing. The German couple aboard still had some very nice early season mackerel, although the pollack fishing was slow.

Another fine day early this week saw a father and son from Wisconsin USA aboard, and another fantastic day on the Atlantic. Light northwesterly breeze and flood tide, fishing was much better. Lots of good size wrasse, pollock, pouting and coalfish, although no sign of mackerel today.
