Winter Shore Angling Festival 2015 Gets Under Way

The Winter Shore Angling Festival 2015, sponsored by Tronixpro, Vercelli and Cennitic got under way today Thursday 22nd January at Balinoulart beach in Co Wexford. Anglers from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Iceland all travelled big distances to compete in this important event on the Irish sea angling calendar.

Sign in took place at Sean Ogs in Kilmuckridge between 8.30am and 9.30am and after receiving all relevant information, anglers headed off to their pegs to set up and await the all in which was called at 12 noon.  The foggy and freezing temperatures which were accompanied a by grey overcast sky gave way to brighter conditions on what could only be described as an unseasonably mild day for January. The earlier menacing sky was replaced with temperatures topping 8 degrees and clear blue skies and many anglers were able to shed the unnecessary layers of protective clothing.

The tide was high at around 9am and was slightly coloured. As the competition got underway at 12 noon the tide was ebbing well. Fishing took place over the next five hours with anglers experiencing varying degrees of success in each of the 4 zones.

There was the usual flurry of activity at the start of the event as anglers picked off fish in the gullies close in. As the tide dropped they targeted their fish at distance. Flounder were by far the most abundant species but dabs, whiting and codling were also taken.  The fishing slowed after the first hour as the tide dropped further and then the grind began. Anglers had to work really hard for each and every fish and despite changes in tactics there was a long eerie lull in the afternoon in many of the zones.

Longest round fish of the day was taken by A. Sampson with  a nice codling of 42cm with G. Griffiths having another cod of 38cm. Honours for the longest flat fish was shared by Warren Doyle and Micheal Quinn each with a nice flounder  measuring 34cms. As the day 1 of the Winter Shore Festival entered the last hour it was really all to play for. The bright clear sky meant that it stayed brighter longer and the flooding tide produced some additional fish in the last half hour of the session.

Irish Angling Update 22/01/2015

It’s best to look forward rather than look back. This week threw everything at us, starting with snow and freezing temperatures, to bitter winds and rain. Saturday 17th saw the opening day on the Laune. The OPW gauge saw the river over 2½ metres high and at Johnston’s the car park was under 6 inches of water. The much anticipated opening day was also on the Currane and Killarney Lakes and anglers took to the water in search of the elusive salmon.
Experienced angler Gerry Looney was out early on opening day on the Long Range in Killarney. Gerry sent us a photo of his first salmon caught which was 10lbs in weight. Poor Gerry’s unphotogenic fish drew many comments and lively debate. It was a bit like turning up to a Tipperary dinner dance in a Kilkenny jersey ! Billy O’Connor was out on the Killarney lakes on Sunday and caught an 11lb springer at 11am. While a smiling Alan Cassidy, from Cork city was very pleased to land his 8.5lb spring salmon yesterday on the lower River Flesk, on Lough Leine Anglers Assoc. waters. Alan is a great believer in C & R but unfortunately he had no option this time but to take the fish as it was bleeding quite badly on release.
The Drowes, which claimed last year’s first salmon of 2014 is still waiting for its prize fish but anglers persist. Hopefully this weekend’s weather will be more agreeable.
Kayak angler Ian Burton and his father chose their own method to fish the Currane. With the freedom of his kayak, Ian managed 2 sea trout and a returning kelt. Also on kayaks were angling pals Roy Cuthbertson from Edenderry, and Kenny Corcoran from Clonbullogue as they lashed lure across Lough Iron. A fantastic way to explore the rivers and lakes, especially in places where it’s not possible to bank fish, or launch your traditional 19ft lake boat.

The Shannon District Fly Fishing crew weren’t the slightest bit put off by the cold weather as they fished at the Laois Angling Centre. Paul Flee and Seamus McMahon were among some of the gang to catch cracking rainbows.
A frosty Fermanagh saw Steven Neely nailing 7lb + pike on a perch kit. Marty Smith and angling guide Mick Flanagan headed to the Inny on Sunday. Marty was in for the shock of his life as he hauled in the River Inny monster. This excellent pike weighed in at 22lbs 1oz and measured 95cm, with a girth of 40cm. This is our ‘Catch of the Week’ winner.

The Erne system was where Rookie bass angler caught some January perch but difficult angling conditions on Ennel made it was next to impossible to locate the fish. The lake is quite high at the moment after recent storms. Ballybay Angling Association held their Winter League on Sunday on Lough Muckno. First place went to Dave Worsnup followed by Seamie Winters and Liam O’Brien.

Sea angling was very quiet this week with only one report in.  Kevin Brain was the man, as he went in search of Codling in Kerry.  His catch was made up of fish around 2 to 3 lb with a few touching the 4lb mark.  He tells us it’s back to bass for him now.

The outlook is for rain in most places tomorrow, followed by a clearance to cooler, drier and brighter conditions with some showers. Milder than the beginning of the week. Saturday will be dry and bright in most areas with sunny spells and with frost gradually clearing. Scattered showers will continue in coastal counties of Connacht and Ulster in the morning. But they’ll die out in the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees with moderate to fresh west to southwest winds gradually easing.

Again all anglers are reminded that life jackets are there to be worn; it may save your life.

Tight lines especially in Ireland,

Nancy Hearne

Cold weather makes Ennel difficult to catch perch

Ennel was a tough nut to crack last weekend, and on Saturday in bitter cold conditions it was next to impossible to locate the Perch. The water temperature was actually higher than air temperature early in the Morning, and this type of weather really seems to affect the feeding patterns of our Predator fish such as pike and perch.

On the first few drifts over what would normally be a Hot Spot for Perch we managed only two takes, and that was it for the day. Pike anglers faired no better, and the lake failed to produce a pike for local anglers on Sunday. The lake is quite high and after the recent stormy weather, it would be advisable to check your boat if its still on the lake.

Freedom of the kayak for pals Roy and Kenny

Fishing from Kayaks has really taken off in recent times, and actually there is a Kayak Fishing Club in Ireland, and I have met some of their members on Lough Lene.Last Sunday I met Kayak angling pals Roy Cuthbertson from Edenderry, and Kenny Corcoran from Clonbullogue as they lashed lure across Lough Iron. The lads had launched at Ballinalack Bridge and ventured the whole way down to Iron in their Kayaks. Fantastic was to explore our Rivers and Lakes, especially where it’s not possible to bank fish, or launch you traditional 19ft lake boat.

A “Reel” River Monster from the River Inny is our 'Catch of Week' winner

Marty Smith with super pike
Marty Smith with a super Inny pike 22lbs 1oz which is our ‘Catch of the Week’ winner

Angling guide and journalist Michael Flanagan reports;
The Lakes and Rivers are all over the shop with high water, and the spell of cold weather has really affected the feeding habits of our predator fish. Mind you last weekend the water temperature was just below 4-degree Celsius, which was actually warmer than the air temperature some early mornings on the lakes.

I have being treating to venture down the River Inny through Lough Iron, and give it a go for a few pike. On Sunday morning when I arrived at Donore Shore a few anglers had already launched and were out on Derravaragh. The wind was blowing right into Donore Shore and it was a bitter cold wind. The plan was to head down the River Inny trolling lures and dead baits right down to Lough Iron. The River was in a huge flood, and the current had us down on Iron in little over an hour. I had teamed up with angling pal Marty Smith and on the way down the Inny River I got one small pike trolling. We knew with all the fresh floodwater, it was going to be hard going on the River. The pleasure of boat fishing along the River Inny is that you can anchor up, or bank the boat where the river is not heavily fished. Quite a few stretches of the River Inny is not fishable from the bank, especially this time of year when it’s in flood. Eventually I reached a favorite Hot Spot of mine on the Inny, and we banked the boat and starting spinning. The spinning proved fruitless, and decided to chuck out a few deadbaits. As they say the rest is History now. Marty got stuck into a huge River Inny Monster and it rattled the scales at 22lbs 1oz, it measured 95cm, and had a girth of 40cm.Its certainly one of the best River Inny Pike in years, and was in mint condition.
We had the pleasure of meeting two Co. Offaly angling mad pals as they ventured along the Inny in their Kayaks. Also this week’s news of the Derravaragh Anglers Dinner, which once again will be held in Weirs Restaurant. Plus something a little different this week, with a photograph of a huge Skate which our Midland Sea anglers might be interested in checking out.

8.5lb Spring Salmon from the River Flesk

Alan Cassidy with spring salmon from the River Flesk

Mr Alan Cassidy, Cork City caught this fine 8.5lb spring salmon yesterday on the lower River Flesk, on Lough Leine Anglers Assoc. waters.
The fish was caught around mid-day on a Black & Gold Flying C.  Mr. Cassidy usually practices C&R, especially on spring fish. However this fish was found to be bleeding heavily on release so he decided it was best to take him.
Water level were medium, with a little colour in the water but temperatures were good.
