Black and Green snakes fish well at Rathcon Lake Fishery winter league

Dermot Page reports from Rathcon Lake Fishery:

The 2nd qualifier of the winter league has just finished. A total of 65 fish were landed which is a record for a January heat. 20 anglers fished the four hours. The first hour as usual was the most productive with a lot of fish caught at the dam and off pegs 17 and 19. Black and Green snakes fished deep and fast seemed to be the best method. The biggest fish of the day at 61cm went to Tony McGrave. The top five qualify for the final in March. The next qualifier is on February 15th. Many thanks to Southside Angling for sponsoring a prize.

Rathcon Lake is 8.5 acres and is stocked with top quality rainbow trout. The lake is fly fishing only and designed to allow maximum fishing so that 90% of the water can be covered. The average depth is 10ft with deep holes of up to 20ft in places. The fishery is open all year round and is home to a wide range of fly life, in particular buzzers, sedges, hawthorn and daddylonglegs, all providing excellent dry fly fishing, especially in the summer evenings.

Codling, Whiting, Dabs and Flounder for John and Peter

Peter Cunningham With A Double at Ballyhack

Peter Cunningham from the Drogheda Angling Centre reports that sea fishing extremely difficult in the North East at the moment. Because of the difficult fishing Peter and fishing buddy John Baker from Navan decided to head south in search of some better angling opportunities. Their locations of choice was Ballyhack in Wexford and Passage East in Waterford. The lads found themselves confined to the estuary because of the high winds and high seas but despite the challenging conditions they still managed to land a few fish. The lads started session at Ballyhack fishing the last of the ebb tide. Baits of choice included lugworm and fish baits fished on a 1 up 1 down with a heavy grip lead. There were plenty of whiting, dabs, codling, flounder  to be had but unfortunately all fish were small. As there were no big fish showing, after a few hours the lads switched to the Passage East side to fish the flood tide to see if this would prove any better. The fishing was similar on this side of the estuary and they fished well into dark. A final change of location in search of better fish took them to Youghal where some whiting and codling to 3lbs were taken. With no marked improvement in the fishing and the worsening weather they decided to call it a day and cut short the trip and wait for better conditions.

If your are planning a fishing trip in the north east or further afield then why not give Peter a call or drop into him for a chat in the Drogheda Angling Centre, Boyne Shopping Centre, Drogheda. Tel: 086 4682516 Emaildrogheda.anglingcentre@gmail.com
