No decision over ESB Donegal eel kill, BBC News

A decision on whether to prosecute the Irish state power company ESB over a major kill of endangered eels in County Donegal is still being considered, seven months after the incident. It happened at a hydroelectric power station in Ballyshannon in April 2014. More than 300,000 juvenile eels, called elvers, died when traps at the bottom of the dam at Cathleen’s Falls became overwhelmed…

Shane Gallagher reports on how things are on the River Drowes:

After 36 hours of rain over last Sunday and Monday the river reached record flood levels peaking at 1.24 metres on the gauge at the Four Masters’ Bridge. The water level has since dropped back to 1.06 metres on the gauge this morning following a dry, frosty weekend.

Water levels look set to remain very high for Opening Day, probably above 0.9 metres, which will make for difficult fishing conditions similar to opening day last season. The forecast is for milder conditions from tonight with rain for the west on Wednesday continuing during opening day on Thursday.
The tackle shop is open from 8am and will be open from 6am on New Year’s Morning.

Catches Improve on Muckno as Weather Improves

Anglers Fishing for Pike on the Gas Lake Yesterday

Just received a report from two anglers who had fished Lough Muckno from the boat on Sunday 28th and Monday 29th December. The lads only boated one pike of 3lb on Sunday and the two other boats that they managed to speak with had blanked. Northerly light winds left it bitterly cold.

Monday was totally different! The wind had shifted to a southerly breeze and slightly stronger but still under 10mph. The lads boated 5 pike from various locations around Black Island, Crane Island and Church Hill. It was still bitterly cold but with proper clothing it’s not a problem. The heaviest pike caught was around 9lb. All the fish were taken on various lures including toby, shad and soft plastics.

Pike Fishing, Frost and Family Fun on Muckno and Ramor

Chris Oliver and His Son Enjoying a Day Out on Lough Ramor Today

There were up to 23 pleasure anglers out on the shores of Lough Muckno yesterday with the majority of them fishing for pike. Families, fathers and sons, friends and individual anglers all endeavoured to catch Ireland’s top freshwater predator, the pike. The weather was extremely cold following a very severe frost overnight. Although it was very cold it would have been much worse if the wind had been blowing. The calm day and winter sunshine made the conditions bearable and in some locations, very pleasant. A couple of small jack pike were hooked during the Ballybay Coarse Angling Match on Black Island but outside the competition zone a father and son from Poland had 5 pike to 85cm on dead-bait. According to captor of some of the fish Sebastien, all the fish were well conditioned and gave a very good account of themselves.

On White Island Kevin McDonald from Belfast has one fish of 8lbs up until lunchtime but most of the other anglers had failed to register a bite. All were hopeful that there would be some activity as the light started to fade.

At South Lodge four anglers had failed to register a bite up until lunchtime and out on the lake 5 boats trolled lures across likely holding areas. Only one fish was observed taken from a boat but it is possible that other fish were taken. One other boat was fishing on the Gas Lake but no fish were reportedly taken.

Meanwhile on Lough Ramor this morning, a young angler from Cavan got off to an early start landing a lovely 17lb fish at 6.30am. Ramor has been producing some nice fish lately with two fish reported taken from the pier on Christmas Eve weighing 17lbs 8ozs and 18lb 1oz respectively. On Saturday 27th December a lovely fish of 19lbs 8ozs was also taken on dead-bait.

83 rivers open for salmon angling in 2015 Minister McHugh also retains reduced licence fee

Regulations and bye-laws for management of the wild salmon fishery in 2015 approved.

Mr. Joe McHugh T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, has approved a suite of regulations and bye-laws that will govern the wild salmon and sea trout fisheries in 2015. These will come into effect from Thursday 1 January 2015.

Minister McHugh said “Fifty five rivers will be fully open and this will provide opportunities for all to share this important natural resource on a sustainable basis.  A further 28 will be open for angling on a “catch & release” basis. ” In all, 83 rivers will open for angling activity in 2015.

“In 2012 the cost of fishing licences was reduced in the prevailing economic climate and I have decided to maintain that price cut for 2015. I believe that lower costs will encourage sales of annual licences and continue to incentivise angling tourists to avail of the Ireland’s first-class angling product”, he added.

Minister McHugh had received management advice in relation to 145 genetically individual wild salmon stocks in Ireland from Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI and this advice was also made available publicly as part of a public consultation process.  Over 20 submissions were considered as part of the public consultation process.

The management advice was based on the scientific assessment of the current status of all stocks carried out by the independent Standing Scientific Committee on Salmon.

This committee comprises scientists from IFI, an Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), the Marine Institute, the Loughs Agency, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI- Northern Ireland) other State bodies and third level institutions.

In all, the Independent Standing Scientific Committee for Salmon (SSCE) assessed 145 rivers and has advised that:-

  • 55 rivers are open as a surplus of fish has been identified in these rivers;
  • 28 rivers are classified as open for “catch and release” angling; and
  • 62 rivers are closed as they have no surplus of fish available for harvest.
