Anger as anglers fail to land sponsorship for children’s competition, Limerick Leader

YOUNG anglers were left reeling when a trout fishing competition was cancelled at the last minute after organisers failed to get support from Inland Fisheries Ireland. The state body had sponsored fish for last year’s event in O’Briensbridge and organisers Limerick and District Anglers Association believed they would have IFI support again this year…

Fish kills from farming less common but ‘still work to do’: IFI, Limerick Leader

AS investigations continue into a slurry spill which killed hundreds of fish in the River Loobagh earlier this month, the regional director of Inland Fisheries Ireland has said pollution from farms is a declining phenomenon. But Amanda Mooney warned that there is “still a lot of work to do” to ensure everybody is compliant with environmental and water quality regulations…

Water temperatures drop at Courtmacsherry but still a lot to be caught

cod0mg pollack0mg pollack-0mg thorn0mg

Mark Gannon, Courtmacsherry Charter Skipper, reports on the sea angling from the area…

There’s a touch of Autumn this week, with water temp well down by as much as 5 degrees and the fishing in the bay and offshore for sharks reflected this.

The Lady Patricia still managed 5 sharks to 60 lbs,and while out on the shark grounds with George Karbos on a nature trip on Wednesday we observed quiet a few around the boat but not as many as usual.

The reef fishing improved as the tides picked up and we managed some good Pollack, conger,Ling and Thornbacks from the inshore grounds. It was nice to see the juvenile anglers landing so many good sized fish this week, plenty of stories for the start of school no doubt! Mackerel are again very plentiful and with so much feed in the bay the next while should prove productive.

The Bass fishing is good at the moment with anglers having success with lures and good size fish from the estuary on live bait, and good fish on rag worm at Timoleague.

Absolute Corkers for Dungarvan guide

Dungarvan guide Jason O’Riordan had a great days fishing in Cork recently and reports:

I generally don’t do any bass guiding outside of Waterford, preferring to leave it to the local guides in an area.  However, I do like to make the occasional visit to Cork every now and then.  There are great quality bass there too.  The forecast wasn’t too bad so Mike and I set off for Cork, boat in tow.  We launched and headed to a likely looking spot, where we were greeted by two IFI Fisheries officers traveling on Jet Ski’s.  I have to say this was a first for us.  We chatted for a few moments and then the guys left us to our fishing.  We made a good start with a nice bass of over 50cm on a plug.

Jason O'Riordan - Cork Bass 1This was followed by a very nice fish of 72cm also on plug.

Jason O'Riordan - Cork Bass 2Normally, when you get a large fish like this you don’t get another but Cork can be a special place for bass fishing.  I switched to a soft plastic and several casts later as we drifted along I felt a soft bump, bump, bump.  Everything went solid and I lifted into the considerable weight of a very good fish.  It put up a mighty scrap on my Teklon Concept Spin.  Finally the battle was over and the fish was aboard.  I took some scale samples and measured it at 75cm.  It was in superb condition too.

Jason O'Riordan - Cork Bass 3The tide was going out and we tried a few more spots.  2 more hits on plugs and then a nice little 44cm fish on the plastics again.  It was well worth getting up early to make the coming tide and considering we only fished for a few hours it was pretty awesome.  Can’t wait to get back there soon for another visit.

Probe after hazardous waste dumped near river – Irish Examiner

A probe is under way after more than 100 containers containing hazardous waste were found dumped near a river in Cork.

Officials from Cork County Council’s environment directorate recovered the containers from a 10m stretch of the banks of the Owenabue, near Shannonbank in Carrigaline, on Wednesday.

While most were empty, some had several millilitres of pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides swishing around inside. The others contained residual amounts of corrosive chemicals….
