Enjoyable fishing in Longford despite bright conditions last week

Alan Fitzjohn – With a nice catch of Tench and Roach from the canal.

Alan Fitzjohn from Lancashire along with his wife Paula were over for a bit of fishing, touring and shopping and decided to use Melview Lodge as their base. The fishing the first few days was very hard going due to the bright sun light and temperatures, Kevin said after talking with a few other anglers this seemed to be the case in most places.

The best results came on the pole using maggot and worm with caster, various seed and hemp fed over the top. Kevin said I had the pleasure of fishing with them for a couple of days and it was great, the lightly prebaited swims produced some good Tench, Roach, Hybrids and nice Perch.

Kevin added the bright weather was against them from the start but they stuck with it and caught some nice fish in the end, and we hope to see them back to Ireland soon.

Specimen pollack for Charter skipper Mark Gannon is our Catch of the Week along with, conger to 30 lb. and blue shark to 2.20m for his anglers at Courtmacsherry

Specimen pollack
Mark Gannon with a 12.5lb pollack

Mark Gannon reports that last week the weather didn’t disappoint for charter boat anglers out of Courtmacsherry and neither did the fishing…. Fishing on the reefs produced some great sport with pollack ,conger and ling being the predominant species.  A pollack caught by Mark Gannon on a shad weighed in at 12.5 lb., an Irish Specimen and wins our Catch of the Week .  The congers were all good fish the heaviest up to 30 lbs.

Sharking is still going well with blue shark to 2.20m for Vincent de Kooter. Vincent’s father landed another over the 2m mark at 2.07m. Olan O’Donovan, only 9 years old, landed a blue of 2.0m (with a little help from the rod rest) he reckoned that it was a way better than the Wicked Tuna programme on the Discovery Channel.

On the self drives, the bass fishing seems to be a bit of hit and miss. A  group from Kinsale caught13 in one session, the heaviest was a fish of 7.5lbs, all returned. There are a lot of fish around and the last time I was out they were following the lures but I only had 1 take. It’s all about timing, evening seems to be best. Mark Gannon  Courtmacsherry Angling

Exotic turtle turns up far from home in Limerick river, Limerick Leader

An exotic turtle has turned up in the river Maigue near Adare, over 4,000 miles away from its native habitat in the South Eastern United States. However it is unlikely the Yellow Bellied Slider travelled to Limerick under its own steam, with fisheries experts believing it is more likely that it is a pet who escaped or was disposed of by its owners. The turtle was found by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) officers while they were working along the river. They described it as being in “good physical condition”…

Missing plastic rubbish 'in fish', Irish Independent

Thousands of tons of plastic rubbish dropped into the oceans is missing – and much of it might be ending up in fish, scientists believe.  A worldwide survey conducted in 2010 showed that the oceans contained between 10,000 and 40,000 tons less plastic than expected. The lost plastic consisted of small particles between a few microns and a few millimetres in size which was under-represented in the seawater samples collected. An unknown mechanism must be removing the fragments from surface waters at a rapid rate, say scientists…

Big Bass from the Wee County

Another Fish for the Lads from the County Louth Coast

The bass close season came and went and now bass anglers are back on the County Louth coastline still “plugging” away in search of this fine sportfish. Ciaran O’Ceartaigh and his fishing buddy David Harrison have tried a few sessions on the Louth/Meath coastline recently and have had some success too. Two keen catch and release anglers, the lads had a word with local tackle dealer and angling guide Peter Cunningham before venturing out to have a go last week. They were rewarded with some nice fish the best of which was a fantastic 72cm fish taken by Ciaran that weighed in at 8.5lbs.  Conditions were ideal, low cloud cover, warm and clear water with plenty of feed around.

For up to date angling information, advice and top tackle, tips and techniques that work why not give Peter Cunningham a call or book him for a days guided bass fishing out on the Louth/Meath coastline. Peter can be contacted at 086 4682516 or by email at [email protected]

The top 20 anglers from the event will now go on to battle it out in a fish off to make up the rest of the Irish team . The overall fishing for the event was good considering the bright sunshine with a total of 3071 fish caught including 11 different species .
