Fisheries Information Manager Markus Müller reports:

Lough Conn

Lough Conn has fished exceptionally well over the past couple of weeks with many excellent catches reported, especially from the Castlehill area. Even recent floods and high winds didn’t really impact on the good fishing. Besides the usual wet fly methods, small dry flies worked remarkably well.

Pontoon Bridge Hotel ([email protected]) reported some good fishing for their guests. Darragh Mulcahy, Cork, had two trout on Claret Bumble patterns, best at 2.5 lbs. off Glass Island, while Kevin Egan & Patrick Sheehy, both Dublin, caught and released a total of 7 fish averaging 1 lbs. Local ghillie, Kieran Connoly, had 3 trout up to 3 lbs. on wets and Jack Mellet, Castlebar, was successful fishing dry flies catching 2 trout, best at 2.5 lbs.
Cloonamoyne Fishery, Enniscoe, Crossmolina, ([email protected]) also enjoyed good fishing: Barry Seagrave, Dublin, and John Warren, Crossmolina, had two good trout each on olive patterns and returned six more. Ian Wise reported 12 trout (all released) in less than two hours in five short drifts in Bog Bay on wet patterns.

Fishing out of Murphy’s Boat Hire, Massbrook, ([email protected]) Mick Sweeney & Mick Mc Hugh, both Galway, boated 10 trout (all released) over 2 days, while Kieran and Martin Foley, both Dublin, took 3 trout each on mayfly patterns, best at 2 lbs.

Clients of Kelly’s Boat Hire, Walter and Susan Byrne, Offally, caught 7 trout (all returned); best 2 lbs. all on wet mayfly patterns. Other successful anglers included Dermot Dunne, Offaly with 4 fish, best at 2 lbs. and Karl Henry, Sligo, who boated 6 good trout for 9 lbs. on wets.

In the Brackwansha area, Padraig Traynor, Crossmolina, had 3 trout best at 2.5 lbs. on dry olives, while Peter Roach, Cloghans, caught 4 fish averaging 1.5 lbs. Stephen Neylon, Dublin, was also successful catching 5 trout on wet patterns, best at 1.75 lbs.

Posh Tosh and Wilie Gunn prove most productive at Ballisodare Fishery

Fisheries Information Manager Markus Müller reports:

Ballisodare Fishery

Catches on the Ballisodare Fishery improved compared to last week with a total of 26 salmon caught, many of which were released. Worm and fly were the most productive methods and with almost 9 lbs. the average size was very good. Amongst the successful anglers were Michael Mullaney and Alexander Mills who both had good fish of 9 lbs. on fly. Club Secretary, Dermot Glennon, caught and released a fine fish of 8 lbs., while fly angler, Vincent Henry, enjoyed great fishing with a total of 3 salmon averaging 8 lbs. over two days. However, the best fish of the week fell to David Shanks. David’s fish weighed 11 lbs. and was caught on the worm. Higher water levels towards the end of the week impacted somewhat on angling conditions. However, the fishery should fish well as soon as levels drop. Most successful flies for the week included Willie Gunn tube flies and the Posh Tosh.

Fishing improves on Lough Beltra with the unsettled weather

Fisheries Information Manager Markus Müller reports

Lough Beltra

The recent unsettled weather resulted in better fishing conditions on Lough Beltra. James Burns, Northern Ireland, had a fine 10 lbs. salmon in Walsh’s Bay, while local ghillie, Eamon Kennedy, reported an eight pounder from the west side of the lake. Newport’s, David Nevin, caught a fresh 10 lbs. salmon at Morrison’s on a Green Peter and Gerard Nowicki, UK, got an 8 lbs. salmon on a Jaffa at the Yellow House. Prospects look very good for the coming days.

The best week of the season so far on the River Moy

River Moy

The River Moy saw its best week of the season so far. A flood on the Bank Holiday Monday resulted in rising water levels and provided improved fishing conditions for some time. The best of the fishing was between Ballina and Foxford with the Ballina Salmon Anglers’ water yielding most of the catches. However, water levels had dropped back to summer level by Friday.

On the Ridge Pool, John Rocha, Dublin, had 3 fish, one on worm and two on spinner, while Tipperary angler, Austin Kenny, caught three on spinner. Garreth Ruigrok, Dublin, was successful on the Moy Fishery’s Freshwater Beat where he landed two salmon on worm.

Anglers on the Mt. Falcon water enjoyed the best week of the season with three generations of the Jordan family, UK, catching a total of 22 salmon over 5 days; best fish at 10 lbs.  All mid river fisheries fished quite well for the week. On the Foxford Fishery, fly angler, Hank Shugg, US, caught and released two salmon, best at 7 lbs.

Further upriver, Monday’s spate didn’t really improve angling and, as a consequence, only a moderate number of fish were reported from this part of the Moy including 2 salmon on spinner for French angler Francis Verveche on the Cloongee Fishery.

Guillaume and uncle Henri-Jacgves from France were on their first Pike fishing trip to Ireland, not only that they had also never been Pike fishing before. Kevin said they were here for a week and also made time to do some sight seeing while they were here, they spent three days fishing with me and considering they had never fished in Ireland or caught a Pike before they managed to catch some cracking Pike.

Guillaume Dewalckenaere is all smiles with a nice Pike

Henri-Jacgves landed a 16 lb. 4 oz which turned out to be the largest over the three days, however between us we lost some very big which on a couple of occasions just took everything and managed to snap the braid. They managed twenty four fish over three days which I think is a great achievement having never Pike fished before, well done guys hope to see you again.

The first two days of the Waterways Ireland Classic Fishing Festival have produced wonderful coarse catches at many venues around Enniskillen.

WATERWAYS IRELAND CLASSIC FISHING FESTIVAL 2014

MONDAY 12th MAY

The 2014 Waterways Ireland Classic got off to a sometimes wet and windy start on Monday on the shores of Lough Erne.  Weather conditions were variable to say the least, with spells of sunshine interspersed with heavy rain showers.  The colder temperatures did not have an adverse affect on the fishing however, with most of the sections fishing well.  In addition, some excellent weights were recorded from the consistent Lough Acrussel, Rossahilly and Cornagrade sections.

The top weight of the day, 28kg 330gms from Peg 14 at Lough Acrussel, earned previous Classic winner John Potters from Lisbellaw the daily overall top prize of £500.  Second with 23kg 880gm was Classic regular Dickie Carr from Cheshunt, netting him £350 for his day’s fishing on the improving Rossahilly section.  In third place was another Classic regular Matthew Hall from Nottingham who landed 20kg 320gm, also from the Lough Acrussel section.  Completing the top four was Jimmy Messer from Durham with 18kg 920gm from Peg 15 on the Cornagrade section.

As is often the case with the Classic, the top thirty on the leader board contains anglers from Ireland, England and Germany.  This year the Waterways Ireland Classic has an entry of 234 anglers in total, a very encouraging increase in numbers.  The long established fishing festival has again attracted a group of dedicated anglers from Germany with one of their number, Heinz Keil achieving 15th place overall today.

Once again the waterways Ireland Classic is wide open going into the second day of the competition on Wednesday.  The expected higher temperatures could have an interesting effect as the week progresses and the draw on Wednesday morning will be eagerly anticipated by all the anglers competing in Ireland’s biggest angling festival.

The action continues tomorrow (Tuesday) with the first day of the Railway Hotel ‘King of the Erne’ festival, organised by the local Erne Anglers Angling Club.

The Classic is sponsored for the twelfth year by Waterways Ireland, with additional sponsorship from DIAWA and is organised by Fermanagh District Council in conjunction with the Inland Fisheries Division of the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure.

WEDNESDAY 14TH MAY

WATERWAYS IRELAND CLASSIC FISHING FESTIVAL 2014

The second day of the three-day Waterways Ireland Classic saw a change in the weather.  The chilly wind and heavy showers of Monday were replaced by the more typical ‘soft’ Fermanagh weather, that is warm and damp.

The change in the weather also brought a further improvement in the fishing, with the traditional Classic sections of Ely Lodge and Rossahilly coming to the fore.  The three top weights of the day came from these sections.  Richard Smith from Audenshaw, who has been participating in the Classic since he was a junior angler, landed 32kgs 350gms from Peg 14 at Ely Lodge, netting him the top daily prize of £500.  In second place Bellaghy angler Derek Buckley’s 24kg from neighbouring Peg 15 at Ely Lodge earned him £350.  Classic regular, Pete Bagshaw from Stainforth landed 23kg 380gms from Peg 7 at Rossahilly to win £250 and complete the top three.  Fourth overall was St Neots angler Anthony Watling Junior, whose 21kg 450gms from the Sligo Road section won him £150 for his efforts.  Top locals today were Paul Eyres and Tony Kersley, in 18th and 19th places respectively.

Today’s action rearranged the leader board somewhat, with Monday’s winner John Potters dropping to sixth place overall but still in contention for the big prize on Friday.  Derek Buckley’s catch today has elevated him from tenth to first overall with Richard Smith a close second, Matthew Hall in third and Neil Mallinson only a roach away in fourth place.

This year the Waterways Ireland Classic has taken to the World Wide Web.  For news and updates on the competition you can click on the Classic Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ClassicFishingFestival, follow the event on Twitter at @FishClassic or visit the Fermanagh District Council website at www.fermanagh.gov.uk/ClassicFishingFestival.

The action continues tomorrow (Thursday) with the final day of the Railway Hotel ‘King of the Erne’ festival, organised by the local Erne Anglers Angling Club.

The Classic is sponsored for the twelfth year by Waterways Ireland, with additional sponsorship from DAIWA and is organised by Fermanagh District Council in conjunction with the Inland Fisheries Division of the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure.

Springers prove elusive in high water in Galway

Water levels rose to 6 gates and have stayed there for the week, following heavy rain and frequent showers last week. As a result, fishing has been difficult in Galway, with 6 fish landed for the week. Dublin angler Paul Wymes took a 10lbs fish on spinner, while Clare man Michael Browne landed a 7-pounder on shrimp. Fergal Cormican from Galway had a 9lbs fish on spinner, while local angler Sean O’Toole showed the way with 2 salmon on the 13th, both fish around 9lbs and taken on shrimp and spinner. Salthill man Dave Lenihan followed that with the best fish of the week today, a fine 10.5lbs salmon taken on shrimp.

Nice conditions produce springers at Kylemore

Fishery manager Nigel Rush was in touch to report 2 good salmon taken on Friday. The first was landed by regular visitor Seamus O’Neil, a lovely 10.5lbs fish taken from Benedicts Pool on the Rock Pool Beat, and the second, weighing 9.5lbs, was caught and returned by Nigel himself, fishing Gavins Pool on the Middle River. Water levels have been perfect of late with the broken weather topping up the lakes, and more angling effort should definitely see results here.

To book fishing at Kylemore Abbey contact Nigel at 095 41178, or mobile 087 9580702, and for latest news check the website at www.kylemorefishery.ie

Carra hits form despite sparse mayfly hatches

Joe Flannelly of Keel River Lodge www.keelriverlodge.com reports some excellent fishing on Lough Carra over the past week. Pat Bannon and Kieran McDonagh from Ballyjamesduff, Co. Cavan had 9 trout over the legal limit and several undersize this weekend (best fish 2lbs, all returned). Visiting Australian anglers Helen Walsh and Ashley Wood had 5 good trout with the best weighing 2lbs. Hugh Flavin from Croom, Co. Limerick had a great day on Carra with 4 good trout and plenty of action throughout the day. Best patterns were olive emerger, Green Peter, Claret & Mallard and Claret Bumble. There were also good hatches of olives yet mayfly were not as plentiful.

Inland Fisheries Ireland staff are very much aware of the number of small trout anglers are encountering on the lakes over the past number of weeks and officers are out on a daily basis carrying out routine checks on both size and bag limits. Anglers are asked to please respect the minimum statutory size (13 inches) and bag limits (4 trout per day) and return any undersize fish to the water as quickly and carefully as possible.
