Ollie wins Shannon Tackle Event – Leitrim Observer

What an amazing couple of weeks we have just had. Up until last Saturday we have had no rain for seventeen days. I would not be aware of this statistic, but for a very simple everyday task as going to the post office.

I was waiting in line and it was very busy. The queue was literally creating a spiral within the small confines of the office. The man behind me told the queue that it had not rained in 17 days and that it was “Shocking”. Nobody said anything. As I was directly beside this man, all eyes took me to be the orators’ friend. I did not know him. However with all eyes on me I just said “The rain hasn’t gone away you know, its just we wear more rain resistant clothing these days”. It was an innocent statement but it sparked off an interesting conversation. A bit part of the conversation dwelt on the subject ‘Mayfly is up on Lough Arrow” A fantastic reason for going to the Post Office. The Mayfly is up!…

Annual Mayfly spectacular takes flight – Mayo News

Mayo News - Mayflies emerging from the water.
Mayo News - Mayflies emerging from the water.

The month of May belongs, although not without reservation, to the trout. It takes its name from the Maia, the Greek goddess of fertility, and what a fertile month it is for us anglers!
One old proverb tells us ‘There is more to fishing than catching fish’, and so there is. If only we can tear our eyes away from the river we could see that the world is green again, that the sky is blue, as blue as the eggs of the thrush, whose nest we found in the ivy-covered wall of that old tower house. The thrush sang while men toiled over that wall and sang while they crumbled into dust. Now their castle makes a fine home.
We would see, too, through clouds of mayfly, as far as the road, where a constant stream of traffic draws honest men to toil again, as surely as I would draw that fat trout to the bank – if only he would take my fly. He will not. I believe it to be a matter of chance and that sooner or later he will – must – pick it out from the multitude of real ones that float over his head….

Damien Willis reports on some recent bass fishing on the Fly in North Kerry.

A lovely bass on fly

Sea Bass can be caught on a fly rod.

A new sport in Ireland that has seen great responses.

11 out of our 34 sea bass were caught this past week on the fly rod in North Kerry in near Caribbean like conditions.

A lovely bass on fly

Twice each year I travel to a remote part of North Kerry and take some time out with some close friends to pursue prized Atlantic Sea Bass. Unfortunatley my 74 year old father Aiden was unable to travel on this adventure. My angling companions on this occasion were Tom Wilson, Greg Muldowney, Daniel Levy, Matthew Penny and Brendan O Sullivan. The past weeks weather and sea conditions could only be described as near Caribbean like conditions with crystal clear seas, warm sunshine and temperatures averaging 18C. Flooding early tides coupled with a warm spell of weather played to our advantage with a total of 34 sea bass and 22 flounders caught and released in North Kerry. In fact the fishing was so good that 3 of out of our 5 angling party watched in excitement as sea bass swam with shoaling mullet along the shore lines. Fly rods were quickly set up and with some skilful double haul casting and presentation of the fly, a total of 11 sea bass were landed. Sea bass are a hard fighting fish and must be respected. They are amongst the slowest growing fish in the ocean. It is prohibited to take and kill more than two bass on any one day. (Bye-law No.667)
The minimum overall size limit of 40cm. From tip of snout to end of tail. The Closed season for bass is from 15th May to 15th June.

I had the pleasure of meeting up with some old friends and would like to thank Tim, Ray, Richard, Joan, Sheila, Brendan, Michael and Deirdre for their warm welcome. I will be returning in September along with my Dad and a party of 5 anglers, fly fishing for sea bass once again.

You can’t put a price on experience and knowledge.

Fisheries Information Manager Markus Müller reports:

Steve Bates and Bill Gutheridge, members of the English Lure Angling Society (L.A.S.), visited the Foxford area for two days pike fishing and were guided by Kenny Sloan on a number of different waters. It was their first to North Mayo and definitely won’t be their last!
The two lure angers accounted for a total of 25 pike, the biggest, a great fish of 22 lbs. falling to Bill. Steve had fish to around 16 lbs. More members of L.A.S. have already booked for October when they hope to beat their personal best in the lakes around Foxford.

Good fall of spent with prospects great for the coming days on Lough Arrow

Fisheries Information Manager Markus Müller reports:

Lough Arrow

Lough Arrow saw a very good week with all methods (wet fly, dry fly and dap) producing good catches. French visitor, Cedric Ducouret, boated two fish on the dap weighing 2 lbs. and 2.5 lbs., while Francis White had 4 trout weighing 11.5 lbs. in one day on dry flies. Local anglers, Rosaleen and Gerard Martin, caught and released 7 fish in one day up to 3 lbs. With the first prolific falls of spent expected, prospects for the coming days are looking good.

Lough Arrow Fish Preservation Association & District Anglers held their annual Mayfly Competition on Sunday 11th May. Forty-six anglers fished the event reporting a total catch of 49 brown trout. Results (heaviest fish only) were as follows:

  • 1st Ken Murray – 4.974 lbs.
  • 2nd Michael Monaghan – 4.144 lbs.
  • 3rd Jonathan Frazer – 2.996 lbs.
  • 4th Orla Walsh – 2.694 lbs.

Walter Frazer won the Juvenile Competition with a trout weighing 1.638 lbs.

Mullet firmly on agenda as bass season closes

mullet
Mullet on fly are great alternative when the bass season is closed

Richie Ryan of Eire Bass would like to remind anglers that during the closed bass season from 15 th May to 15 th June, those wishing to bend a fly rod can switch to fly fishing for mullet. Richie has continued to enjoy consistent catches of this wily quarry in recent days on the MK2 fly and reckons prospects are good for more during this settled weather.

SIDNEI IS BACK, WITH A BANG!! landing a pike of 21 lb. 10 oz.

SIDNEI IS BACK, WITH A BANG!!

by RichieGFIreland

In April we had a visitor from Brazil with us and his ambition was to catch some Trout and Pike. He was successful with the Trout then, but the Pike eluded him.

Not one to be beaten, Sidnei came back to Ireland and last week we went to the midlands in search of some Irish Pike. We happened to pick a very windy and wet day, and many times during the day we had to head for shelter as the lough got very rough. the Irish weather did not deter Sidnei and not once did he stop fishing.

We fished in some of the shallower water and even in some of the inflowing rivers and using small Rapala lures Sidnei had a couple of offers, and eventually landed a small jack. He told me he now wanted a big one!!

Out onto the main lough again and we covered a few of the bays with lures, jerkbaits and even float trolled deads. A fish did take a deadbait but dropped it as quick in the rough conditions.

A change of tack was needed and we headed for some deeper water and trolled big crankbaits and spoons. We were seeing a lot of fish on the sonar and a huge amount of them seemed to be shoals of bait fish, probably Perch and Roach. Then, out of the blue, one of the rods buckled and a fish was on. Instantly the fish surfaced trying to spit the lure back at us, and it was a good one.

Even though Sidnei piled on the pressure, the fish put up a great fight, and bored down deep taking line on a few occasions. Eventually, we got it near the boat and soon had it in the net.

Sidnei let a great roar of relief as he was a nervous wreck during the fight, but now at last he had his big Irish Pike. The lure, a Shallow Invader..

She went 21-10 and I am sure would have weighed a bit more a month previous.. A few quick photos, and the fish was back in the lake safely released.

Sidnei now wants to try his luck at some Lough fishing for Trout with the fly. I can see a Mayfly trip on the cards and with Sidnei’s determination I think he might do well. Watch this space!!

With the Mayfly now starting to appear, to book a day with Richie email us at [email protected] or call him directly on 083 1695975.
