Mask provides some great fish

Ronan Cusack reports that angling on Mask blew very hot and cold for the second half of last week, as low pressure and easterly winds dominated the weather. Mayfly and olive hatches were very unpredictable and changed from one day to the next.

Ballinrobe and District Anglers held their annual 2-day development competition over the bank holiday weekend. 66 anglers took part and 105 fish were weighed in over the 2 days. First place went to the team of Tourmakeady angler Mick Dunne and Frankie Guilfoyle from Ennis, with 10 trout for 14.07lbs. In second place were Tom Foley (Ballinrobe) and John Forde (Cork) with 11 trout for 13.30lbs. Denis Kelleher (Ballinrobe) and Ronnie Law (Northern Ireland) took third place with 10 trout for 12.34lbs. Richard Cleary (Cork) weighed in the heaviest fish of 3.37lbs. Kevin Egan (Ballinrobe) won the best Ballinrobe angler prize with 6 fish for 8.88lbs.

Cavan anglers Vincent Kelly, Cian, Darragh and Brendan Murtagh spent 3 days on Mask last week with Ronan and Joe Cusack. Conditions were tough and the lads finished with 9 trout over the size limit. Cian and Vincent were fishing Buzzer in Ballahalla on Friday when Cian asked boatman Ronan to hold his buzzer rod in order for him to set up dries. No sooner had he done this when the line ran off and a cracking trout of 6.75lbs was on the other end. After a 20 minute battle Cian landed the fish with the help of his boat partners Vincent and Ronan.

Hugh Jameson Northern Ireland fished with David Hall of Hall’s Angling Centre on Saturday last and they had 6 fish for their day (best fish 5lbs). 2 French anglers also staying at Hall’s fished for 3 days last week and they had 12 trout (best fish 2.5lbs). Norwegian angler Rune Dunne fished for 3 days in the early part of last week and he had 7 trout on dries (best fish 4.5lbs). Ivan McGough Northern Ireland had 11 trout over 3 days on Mask last week (best fish 2lbs). David Hall fished on Bank Holiday Monday and he had 3 fish (best fish 1.5lbs). "Time Out" Fishing with Jim Hendrick

Bass are Truly Fish With Attitude

Saltwater guide Jim Hendrick has had one or two outings following his recent successful Saltwater Fly Fishing Primer in the Bella Vista Hotel in Cobh, Co Cork. Details of the primer can be found at the link above.
We all like to catch a fish or two and taking some time out after the workshops with a friend Jim shows that he can as always deliver the goods. Fishing with soft plastics, the lads had several fish during their outings and Jim has sent photos of two nice fish that were caught measuring 58 cms and 64 cms respectively. Very nice fish by any standards.

A taste of Donegal fishing on the May bank holiday

Fiiish Crazy Sand Eel

A taste of the fishing from Donegal with Steven Neely reporting:

It was nice to be heading off to Co. Donegal for a long weekend and with the forecast given it was looking promising. The weather during the week was settled and the wind was to be coming from the south – which suits me nicely as most of my marks face north.

We arrived late on Friday night, geared up and set the alarms.

Early next morning we were up and on the coast for just after 7 am and it was looking in good shape – clarity was fantastic and for once no huge swell.

Sounds good right? Nothing! Not a tap, follow or bite ……. It was odd. I was left scratching my head and still am. The only thing I can put it down to was the wind switched slightly into the SE and the pressure took a dip briefly but perhaps it was enough just to switch it off.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAfter getting back and having some well needed breakfast we decided to take a run out for sea trout to see if we faired any better. A short hour long session produced 6 fish. Nothing big but it was a relief to catch something.

We decided to try the coast again the next morning to see if things changed. We set off for a different mark with slightly trimmed expectations. Conditions were similar to before and the results not much different.

We managed a few plump pollack at the start but then it all slacked.

As we had done the day before we headed out for some sea trout and caught another 5. Sport was good though on the 3-12g rods.

I had started using a Smith TR Surger – great looking little lure and I have high hopes for it later in the season.

It was nice though to get out and about over the weekend and be able to fish in relatively calmish conditions compared to what we had at the start of the year.

Things seem to be warming up now and hopefully will start to kick off.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAA nice little trout to end the session.

4th World Feeder Fishing Championships 2014

With 24 teams now confirmed to compete at the FIPSed 4th World Feeder Fishing Championships In July it will be the best attended in the event’s short history.

The National Coarse fishing federation of Ireland, the representative body for coarse anglers north and south of the border have taken on the mammoth task of not only securing and hosting the event but working with their partners ESB, Cork County Council, Avondhu Blackwater Partnership Ltd, Inland Fisheries and the Angling Council of Ireland to develop a 2.8km stretch of water to championship standard.   The primary development to provide road access to the venue now in its third phase and due for completion at the end of May has involved cutting through rock to depths of 3 metres at stages and the re-piping of springs and streams.

Dick Clegg OBE, inspecting the venue on behalf of the FIPSed Technical Committee earlier this month said

‘There can be no more fitting place than Ireland to hold a World Feeder Championship and Inniscarra looks to be an inspired choice. If the fishing is as stunning as the location then we can expect a fantastic event for the 4th FIPSed Feeder Championship.   Ireland has always been a mecca for English anglers, myself included, and the feeder has played a major role in many huge catches of bream and roach.  With the access development around the lake complete, then everything looks to be perfect for a great match and I have no doubt that visiting anglers will enjoy their stay in Ireland.

I wish the organisers the best of luck for taking on such a huge project and I hope it helps to swell visitor numbers to this part of the country’

The Inniscarra Reservoir, one of two reservoirs in the Lee Valley in County Cork in the South East of Ireland, resulted from the development of the Lee Hydro-electric scheme in the late 50’s. A water of some 530 hectares it has over 40km that can be fished, like many Irish waters access can be difficult; popular sections such as ‘graveyard’, ‘garden centre’ and ‘Wall’ are regularly used on the Irish Festival scene but with the ability to drive along and park behind your peg you can expect the venue to become very popular indeed.  A year round venue is known for its Bream catches but in latter years quality Roach and Hybrids dominate.

Tommy Lawton, NCFFI International Events Committee says ‘the NCFFI has been supported in this task by the Inniscarra Lake Development Group without whom this project would not be possible. We are delighted that in our partnership we can add world class angling to the Inniscarra Lake Amenity and encourage tourism in this fabulous region of Ireland.

According to FIPSed rules the stretch must be closed for 2 weeks prior to the championships, opening only for practise from the Monday prior to the event which commences on the 19th July. The ILDG however run a series of festivals back to back commencing on the 24th May and finishing with a three day Feeder Only competition on the 1st to 4th June.

Blessington pike entertain American anglers holidaying in Ireland

pike
Terry Jerry had this long lean pike on his trip with Richie

Richie Johnston of Guide Fishing Ireland had a few visitors over from the USA in April…

I was out pike fishing with Andy Gonzales, a friend of Nathan and Rachel from Texas who I had previously guided on some smaller rainbow fisheries. He is on a month long tour of Europe and was in Dublin for a very short stay. With only a little time, he wanted to try and catch his first Pike. We chose to fish Blessington Reservoir with its close proximity to Dublin, and luckily the weather was perfect.

pike
Andy Gonzales caught his first pike ever during a quick visit to Ireland as part of a European tour

We went out from Ballyknocken in the boat and spent the afternoon trolling lures and fishing some of the shallower bays. After a couple of half hearted takes, Andy eventually latched onto a fish on a Rapala Super Shad, and soon his first Pike was in the boat after a short fight. He was delighted.

A few days later I was there again with 2 great guys from Arkansas, Terry Jerry and Drew Baker. Again they wanted to see a Pike. At home these guys regularly fish for Bass, Walleye and Gar and were very good lure anglers. In conditions that were far from ideal the lads stuck it out and Terry was rewarded with a very long lean Pike which should have been heavier. Obviously she had spawned a while back, but the way she chewed the Shallow Invader lure, she wont be long about packing it back on!
